Hi I bought a fantastic horse 3 weeks ago, everything's been going great. When I bought her she had a fatty lump on her elbow, her owners said she had come in from the field like that and thought she had been kicked. She was never lame and the size of the swelling had reduced. It looked completely healed at the time. I brought her home and after a week or so I was bringing her in from the field (she's out 24/7) and noticed this lump had opened slightly, no heat and no lameness, I have been using green oil antiseptic to keep the flies off. It began to heal again. Today after a ride I checked it, it was fine, I put her out she had a roll and opened it up again! So after googling I think it is a shoe boil! Any advice?

Her previous owners had a vet but they thought she had been kicked in the field. it healed and never re opened until now, the original injury was 13th June 2011

But did you not have her vetted when you bought her? Is she sound?

I looked up shoe boil and it said it was like a capped hock but on the elbow? If it is an open wound over a joint should she not be seen by a vet now?

The wound is only about 1 cm
Long and only a few mm deep. I know what you are saying though. I am going to contact the vet Monday unless it gets alot worse. I was just hoping someone may have been able to give experiences or advice in the meantime

Also yes she is completely sound. I didn't have her vetted as I wasted a couple of hundred quid having my last horse vetted and ended up having to have him pts :( her last owners had her 4 years and were genuine people we have mutual friends.

she may be catching her elbow with the heel of the shoe, when ashe is lying down . i would try her in some good over reach boots or a sausage boot for 6 to 8 weeks. discuss this with your farrier. treat wound as a wound, keep clean and moist. you really dont want a capped elbow forming.

Thank you 'of course you can' you just gave me my own advice! She's defiantly catching it when she goes down to roll. I have over reach boots on her since realising this today, farrier is coming on wed and looking for a donut sausage boot too!

Easy to make your own sausage boot - buy one of these (swimming noodle) - see pic, cut to length and put a spur strap through the hole in the middle - cheap and easy. Also ask your farrier to rasp hard edges off the heels of front shoes to reduce the risk of injury

Thank you Evelyn, pictures too! I rushed out today and bought a sausage boot (b4 I saw your post) I can't see how it's going to make any difference though so might try your blue Peter version as it will be thicker, thank you helpful people :)
