Shoe removal cost at vets...£160!!

Am I going mad or is £160 to remove all four shoes pre MRI an absolutely BONKERS charge!? It is going through insurance company but I'm nearing my max claim and my farrier would have done it for free!!!

Don't have the energy to question it to vets but wondering what others have been charged!?

Well that is totally ridiculous, charges such as this should be questioned by the insurance companies, a few refusing to pay may get the vets being a bit more realistic about what they do charge, the average farrier will remove for next to nothing so even if they had to call one in just for your horse the profit they are making for a few minutes of his work is probably at least £140 even if they add on a bit for him being held it still cannot be justified.

Unless your horse is normally bad for the farrier, why would shoe removal need sedation?

Oh no, that was a seperate £160 charge for a "remedial trim" and set of shoes

:O gobsmacked!! Which practise was it? Did they fly in some super specialist farrier at £160 the trim and shoes is expensive enough! (and as farriers daughter I know what even the extra speshul shoes cost - other than imprints have yet to see anything come to that )

It's made even better by the fact I didn't even want him shod �� Oh well, I'll query the removal cost. When I spoke to the farrier after he said I'd have to not ride on man made surfaces if he's barefoot. Sigh, you'd expect more from one of the leading g UK equine hospitals. Anyway everything else was top notch!

So that is £320 for what would normally be around £80, even remedial shoes would not add that much and what is a "remedial trim" if not a normal part of prepping the foot correctly.

I would assume that the Insurance company will definitely query it, as it's in their best interest to.

I'd give the vet practice a buzz and just play the nice card and see if it was an honest "mistake".

Hmm nothing surprises me anymore the horse trod ont he dogs foot she had three stitches, dressings an xray and sedation for x ray the bill through insurance came to a mind boggling £658 69p. I am certain it would have been less than half if we hadnt insured her

I think as a result of insurance companies picking up the tab a lot of practices feel they can charge what they like - it doesn't hurt the vets or the insurers, they just increase the premiums. That is well OTT though - as also is the remedial shoes invoice. My heartbars with leather pads a couple of years ago by the highly regarded local remedial farrier were £120.

Most vets call in a farrier to remove shoes, so the farrier is called out as an emergency.
That said the vets should advise shoes off before going in, if they did not advise this then I would query cost if they sis then I think you just have to pay their fees you could have had thwm removed by your farrier before going in
