But she posts regularly about him now and people love her updates. Because, at the end of the day, it's much better for the pony to be in work than have lami and spend its life living alone in the starvation paddock! Surely that's the case here too?
 
Shetlands are extremely strong and hardy. Anyone can see that this pony is not in any discomfort or pain?
And calling her a 'retard' is out of order.

She's doing nothing wrong. And she's not breaking the law in anyway.
Look at the pony. It's fine.
 
The only thing I would say is put your stirrups up a few more holes so you don't accidently whack your leg against his although saying that, please be careful you don't inadvertantly slide back in the saddle and end up sitting too far back.

Other than that, and as a fellow shetland rider, enjoy him :D

He was being a monkey and the owner asked me to ride him for them, I felt a bit mean TBH but he didn't seem to struggle. Wouldn't ride him on a daily basis however or jump him ( more from fear of going over the top!)

They all know each other. It's like a pony squishing circle. Stupid, cruel and totally unacceptable. None of you should have animals. BB/Christmas cracker - the horse in your sig looks undernourished too.

Isn't that the mare which is like 44 years old?

Must be some horse to tolerate the OP's abuse and genera cruelty and unfitness for ownership to get to that age :rolleyes:

Beauty? The grey. She is 44 years old and certainly is NOT. She is very well loved. BB only posted pictures of her about a week ago looking fab for a lady of her age. Do keep up Wagtail :rolleyes:

I'm afraid I see very little similarity between PFB's vid and those photos. CF's pics are in between the two. My opinion of course.

Seen as we're discussing people too big for their ponies..
At 5ft 11 and 10 Stone, what are your opinions on me riding a 14hh New Forest Pony?
Bearing in mind I have massive legs.. :D

Yes I have wellies on, (Because it was freezing and i had big wooly socks on which my joddy boots couldn't fit around) and the reins are slack (Because I was chilling for the picture)

sorry PF, I haven't checked in with 'the other thread' so am really only comparing the photos from here to the photos from nm's thread. I don't see too much difference between these two specifically. I know I weighed 8 stone when I was a kid and still rode my shetty. She was a cow bag! No one ever raised an eyebrow though, I assume because I didn't look tall on her?
 
See no problem with OP's riding Shetland unless doing endurance. They are tough, bred for weight and hardy. Op looks to be a competant rider and sits in the right place. I have seen people on bigger horses and feel so sorry for the horse as they thump and sit all wrong.
 
I used to ride a Shetland when I was about sixteen. I was about five foot eight and weighed probably around eight-ish stone. Used to wear rollerskates... :cool:

OP looks alright. Pony seems happy enough. All the Shetlands I've ever met, if they didn't like something they wouldn't do it, so I'd go with that as the guide. Plus, I'm not a vet nor a physio, so if vets and physios have all said Yes, who would I be to gainsay it.
 
I once knew a FBHS would was ride judge a M&M champs which included riding Shetlands. Whilst not a huge person she must have weigh 8+ stone.
As to the NF, there is a class at the NF show for ponies to carry over 12 stone , rider to be weighed at the side of the ring.
Although people are a lot bigger than they used to be you have to remember that these ponies were bred to work, and lived on far poorer diets than they are fed today. They were the farmers riding horse, plough horse and would pull a cart to market. I can see why the Shetland islanders in the past would have bothered with the ponies if they could not do a job, after all a sheep is far more thrifty, usually has two lambs, you can make a jumper out of it and its tasty to eat.

I guessed as much (thought never thought 44!) but was trying to do as the OP asked and 'shoot her down'.
 
to me the types of shetland posted on this thread look like 'proper' standard shetties. The one on the other thread, though perhaps tall for a mini seems to have the confo of a mini which doesn't really suit riding.
