Hi guys, for my third year university dissertation I've decided to look at horse rider's perception into TB's and cobs.

There's so much research on perception of breed in dogs, but nothing in equine, hence why my dissertation is quite important for the equine science world. It'd be awesome if you could help me out and be a part of my research :)

The link to the survey is here : https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RX6LDNM

Thank you so much in advance! The more responses I get, the better my study will be!

Only issue is a 'cob' isn't a breed it's a type so you are comparing a breed with a type....

I appreciate that, but if I were to be more specific with breed then some people may not have understood it / answered well. The title for the project is 'perception of horse type', not breed :)

Done, but I needed a box to tick for 'other' because it wouldn't let me complete without ticking something. Have ticked, & noted in 'other' box what I'd rather have put.

Last question isnt working properly as there is no radio button for 'other' although theres a box to detail what 'other is'. I've ticked a random choice and then detailed my answer in the box.

If I was going to a riding school I would expect the horses whether TB or Cob to be suitable for the purpose of the school. It would have been worthwhile asking if in general you were trying a horse with a view of buy. Some cobs are very forward going and quirky and some TBs are very quiet. Did you run a pilot of this survey first? Not sure that your questions cover your hypothesis adequately. Good luck anyway.

Oh dear, perhaps its just me, I did try to complete the survey, but couldn't really give honest answers, so gave up. Sorry OP!

For instance, the questions on how you'd react if offered a TB/cob for a lesson, physical sensations like "nausea, dry mouth, sweating" etc etc. Whilst most people who wouldn't necessarily want to ride a TB/cob probably wouldn't go into that level of panic mode!!! I'd have preferred the questions to reflect the level of anxiety maybe, i.e. reading something like "if you were offered a TB for a lesson, how would you feel, i.e. quite OK, not really OK, wouldn't mind either way, quite like, very much like", OR "very anxious, moderately anxious, OK/neutral........ etc etc." rather than quite violent physical reactions which probably most people wouldn't have!!

Equally the questions re. predicted behaviour of a Cob or TB. i.e. would you expect them to be spooky, lively, lazy, unpredictable etc etc. I've got a cob: and some days he's bone idle, other days he's lively! Likewise sometimes he'll spook at his own shadow, next day he'll meet every tractor-dragon around! I know some TB's who are bombproof, and cobs who are not! And both "types" are like all horses, able to be unpredictable. So I'd need to tick every single box, which probably would make your survey topsy-turvey!!!

So sorry, couldn't complete it. Don't know how else you could do this survey tho' OP!!! Well done for trying.

Done, but couldn't really answer some so put in the 'others' box instead.
I know some really safe thoroughbreds and then I know my own cob, who is lively and not that easy to ride, so i don't assume anything from physical appearance of the animal :)

Done but probably skewed your results - the dopiest , easiest horse I've ever known was a TB & the most challenging & spookiest was a cob.
Most of the questions were totally meaningless - OP I assume you are a nervous novice as I can't imagine anyone with experience producing that survey?

This, although I did finish the survey

This, although I completed the survey

I did complete the survey but found some of the questions hard to answer.
I would echo what some of the others have said above re: some of the questions and a breed vs a type.
And perhaps I may also have skewed the results as some of the cobs I have ridden has been fully charged, spooky, strong, unpredictable etc and I have ridden a TB or two that would be strong contenders for the biggest "dope on a rope" award!

I looked at the survey intending to complete it but decided that the questions were too badly designed to be of much use in any research. Why wasn't there a choice to indicate excitement/pleasure at being allocated each horse. It seemed that the rider only had the opportunity to be terrified or indifferent, neither of which described how I would feel.

I didn't answer the questions.

Sorry i also started and gave up as the q's just seemed a bit irrelevant, I'd feel nervous riding an unsuitable horse not a particular breed or type!

Tried to complete but gave up.

Think you need some more thought about the structure of this survey and what you are trying to achieve as without that, the answers that you are going to get will be meaningless. You make assumptions and show bias which is not good

I'm sorry but I couldn't take your survey, but I would like to participate in another way.

I had a riding school for almost 9 years with around 300 riders coming through each week. The majority of which would have not known a TB or cob if it were labelled as such.

The majority of my horses were ex TB racehorses as are the majority of horses that people ride in NZ. Several of them had won races as youngsters. All were perfectly sane, easy to ride horses, no hang ups or problems.

99% of novice riders would have no preconceived ideas as to what it might be like to ride either a TB or a cob. For many just the idea of getting on ANY horse might be nerve wracking.

Done!! I may be biased because I really love thoroughbreds, and I find cobs way too wide, bordering on uncomfortable to ride.

I won't have helped your results either as most options were either meaningless or inappropriate, what to expect of a type depends on your experience, having known so many horses of all types with a full range of traits meant I ticked almost all of the ones available, apart from dangerous because I never expect a horse to be dangerous. It was not a survey that was easy to answer other than to either tick all boxes in places or leave blank elsewhere, the results are unlikely to be of much benefit.

Ditto this, I ended up ticking every box bar dangerous

done - though I would expect a riding school to not put me on an unsuitable mount considering my experience and nervousness and I love cobs so may have been a bit biased :/ I have owned, ridden and worked in TB studs and have found them all to be individual, some quirky, others you could put a child on but my own preference is not to own another . not sure if that helps you at all really sorry :(

I have completed it but I didn't find it easy as the options didn't match what I would feel- eg for a tb I would feel happy and excited to ride whereas a cob I would feel more reluctant as I personally prefer tbs. neither type scares me!
