I bought a 12yo tb mare 2 years ago. She was cheap and at the time a bag of bones with no muscle so I didn't bother having her vetted. Got her up to weight and condition and done a bit of everything with her!
3 months ago she was diagnosed with High Ringbone, side bones and DJD in her RF. This probably would have been picked up on a vetting had I of had it done! I am not saying I wouldn't have bought her as she is the best thing I have ever bought but I may have been slightly more prepared and would have a been a lot more careful on what I did wiht her so that we wouldn;t have had the 3 motnhs off due to lameness and the shocking news that she may never be ridden fully again!
Luckily for me she wasn't going to be this way and is now coming back into full work and is staying sound
All I am saying is that he sounds fantastic and for me the age would NOT put me off one bit but a vetting can be quite an eye opening thing for the future as preperation for something which may arise later on!
Wish you well
