I've been pondering hogging her for a while now as her mane is long but straggly and thin. YO is dead set against it and I've slowly converting my mother dearest into it. I think she'd look quite smart because she's got a short thick neck that could do with some shape!
She gets really horribly sweaty under her mane making her mane tangled and her neck itchy meaning she rubs some of it out anyway. I think the mares and foals next door have been chewing at her mane as well. I'm also in the process of getting weight off her so excuse the chubbiness for now! :D

With her mane brushed and fluffed out

From a while back from the other side when she had a puffy bit on top of her mane

Appologies if the pics don't work I've no idea how to work them with the new H&H

Why not try it - you can always grow it back and if she's getting sweaty and itchy might make her more comfy. She's a bonny lass.

Why don't you just shorten it? I don't like hogging, I'm afraid I think it looks ugly :-(

Is it being made thin by a neck rug? If so, you could leave it of and she would find it a little bit easier to lose weight.

I agree, just shorten it a little. For me it has to be a good mane and plenty of feather! :)

I normally look at these and have a good idea which will look best. With your horse I'm not sure. I would trim mane (short). Then take some more photos

For me she doesn't have enough bone to be a hogged cob

.

Depends on type of horse, this creature left hairy is ugly, produced nicely and he looks like this and fetched a lot of money.

I'd pull it short and see how she looks, if you don't like it, then hog. If you don't like that, invest in some Megatek and let it grow back. You'd be surprised how quickly it grows. In any case I'd trim her feathers - if you grow her mane long again you can let them grow at the same time.

Having the same dilemma with mine at the moment. My fieldmate is horrified at the very suggestion (although hers has been hogged for years and years and is now being grown out for the first time).

I have shortened it a bit but he hates the process and gets quite upset so I am left with a filthy, thick mane.

He's not clipped yet so may just slip with the clippers...

She has a really short neck.. I am not positive it will look great.. like other, pull it to a plaiting length ish (4 inches of so) then see what you think and if it's a no no then whip it off..

I actually think she is one you have a definite choice with, either turned out as native (though front feathers are off already?) with a shortened mane or hogged. I those that say she doesn't have the neck to carry a hog off must be looking at a different picture to me!

How about having her in an arab plait for a bit and seeing how it looks/you feel about it?

I normally prefer my cobs as hairy as possible (I know but I don't show anyway and I like the fluff :o) but I actually think yours would look amazing hogged :)

This. Feathers with pigoil or off depending on winter turnout.

Personally I dont think she's chunky enough to hog, I'd just pull it shorter

I don't think she looks heavy enough to hog. Shorten the mane a bit to clean her up.

I'd say she had more bone than my horse and he suits being hogged. We don't county show or anything though so can get away with it :p OP how old is your mare (sorry not sure if you've mentioned before)? Rosk was a weed when I got him but if you build her neck up a bit more I think she'll definitely suit it.
