as some of you know i veiwed a lovely 14.1hh 4 year old PBA.

i said i wanted her and said ill drop off a deposit. i said is £50 okay. as shes only holding her for a week and ill pay rest on collection. she said she wanted £200. i cant afford that until pay day (a week later). so i said £100? and she again said no.

so i said keep her advertised and if shes still avaliable in a weeks time, ill come and get her. anyway, ive been watching her advert and its still says shes avaliable so i gave her owner a text to make sure as if she was, ill start getting things ready. no reply. its been a few days now where she hasnt replyed so i tried to call this morning but again, no reply.

ive just seen a lovely 16hh who im going to see tomorrow. and if i like him, shes already said £50 deposits fine to hold him til i can collect.

should i just give up on the mare? shes a lovely pony but as i said, had some wierd bald patches on her. ill try one last text tomorrow.

I don't mean to be awful but I would worry about selling my pony if someone was struggling to find a deposit of 200, I would worry that they may not have the money for emergencies. I know this may not be the case at all but I know it would cross my mind

countrychick i can see your point. but seriously, anyone who has a spare £200 going at the end of the month, im jealous. but then again, i did treat my NF to a new saddle so i really am skint :(

ah well. ill see if she gets back to me by the end of tomorrow. if not, ill move on.

As a seller I would also be worried about you not being able to afford the deposit money - how can you afford to pay the full amount if struggling for deposit?

dont appologise. i did ask! and its a very good point. i never thought about it like that.

my reasoning for a small deposit is partly because of her bald patches, i wanted a skin swab done so ive put the money aside for that and im not getting the pony unless the swabs come back clear. IMO £200 is a lot to put down on a filly who might or might not have a skin condition as well as the vets fee when the pony is at £500 anyway.

never mind. i doubt she will get back to me now anyway. and she has about 6 youngsters for sale so prehaps she has a lot on her plate at the moment.

im just going to look forward to tomorrow! with any luck, Horse will be just as discribed.

Ah, well that's a bit different, I would normally put down or ask for a deposit of 10%, so if I was buying/selling a horse for £500 then I would put down/ask for a deposit of £50.

If you can't afford 200 at the end of the month why are you buying a new pony/horse?
As a seller I wouldn't touch you with a bargepole.

Good job she isn't buying from you then. The fact that the filly may have a skin issue and the fact that she is only £500 I would think that 10% deposit is ample.

J, what is the 16hander??

i already have two horses. im not an idiot and i can work out if i can afford another, which i can.

still no sign of a reply.

thanks M, hes an 8 year old whos been out of work for the past few months due to his owner having a baby but she cant afford him anymore. looks like a really nice type and something that would be good fun over the summer! fingers crossed. owners seems lovely too.

I think there will be a lot of people who dont have £200 left at the end of the month, that doesnt mean they cant look after their horses.

I think the point that is trying to be made is if your already looking after 1 horse and looking to buy another horse then your monthly horse spend is going to go up and if you don't have spare money currently at the end of each month then what are you going to when you actually have another horse. I don't have a spare £200 at the end of each month either, but I can comfortably manage my monthly spendings and I'm not looking to potentially increase them with another horse. If there is no money for a deposit then from a purely commercial point of few then I'd be thinking where is the money to buy actually coming from.

Sorry to sound negative but I have to agree with some of the other posters.

If I was selling a horse then I'd want to know that the new owner could comfortably afford e.g. 6,000k for colic surgery or similar at very short notice. (Which might be necessary even with an insured horse due to exclusions.)

I currently don't own because whilst day-to-day financing wouldn't be a problem I can't guarantee that my circumstances won't change and I would not be able to afford both a retired and a ridden horse. (Am home-for-life type with all my animals so this matters to me.) It isn't ideal for me but I think it is probably responsible.

It might be worth sitting down and working out how you would cope if (and obviously I really hope this doesn't happen!) all your horses needed expensive veterinary treatment at once. Try to account for the worst case scenarios as well as day-to-day. Personally I wouldn't want to have to PTS for financial reasons because I couldn't afford treatment that would otherwise help. And, depending on method/if horse in on pain killers at the time then even PTS can be a lot more than 50GBP.

Best of luck with all your current/potential equines.

you caught me... i stole it..

right lets get this out there right now and i will give you my financial run down.

i live at home. my mum is horsey. we share the cost of semi retired first horse Rups and i pay for 4year old NF Pen. Rups and Pen have everything they need. Pen was never brought for ME to ride him for the rest of his life. he has girl X coming to start riding him for me now hes backed and going nicely. this leaves me with no horse to play with. i have plenty of money for horse number three. it just so happens, i brought newfie a new saddle as his one is rubbish. that cost over £200 let alone the weekend break me and my OH went on this month. i have enough money to spoil my horses and to spoil myself. just means me and my OH miss out a bit. why shouldnt i buy another horse for me to play with if i can afford it?

My what a pleasant person you are, I do hope that no prospective buyers come within 100 feet of you, Rudeness and Arrogance like that is why this country is in the state it is.

AGREED! Wouldn't particularly want to buy a horse off of someone with such an unpleasant attitude.

The ever so polite SusieT
Not everyone has £200 left at the end of the month and why should the OP put down a £200 deposit on a £500 horse??? I have 3 horses, i`m not rolling in it, all my horses get the love and attention needed and never ever go without! I go without not them. Dont be so bloody rude!

OP I`d leave this horse, if as you say it has weird bald patches and seller is being a numpty dont bother....
Keep us updated on the new one your going to see xx

Sweetheart , you don't have to justify yourself to anyone ,it's all swings and roundabouts with horses anyway, mines had his back checked , teeth done , jabs up to date all in one month so I'm a bit skint now too , doesn't mean to say I can't afford a horse.. hope you find what you're looking for .

i hate the part of this forum when people judge you on something you type. at the end of the day i know i can afford horse number 3. i will get horse number 3 when the right one comes around and i know that horse number 3 will have the best possible care.

and back to the question i asked. im not going to text or call her anymore and im going to continue looking. and i will update anyone who is interested with a huge report as soon as i get the chance.

Your finances are your business & no-one elses, it is very unfair of them to expect you to justify what you can/can't afford.

In answer to your question, £50 deposit on £500 pony is fair, your offer of £100 is very generous as you may loose it after vet assessment. As such, she obviously just (for hwatever reason she may have) doesn't wish to sell her pony to you. My advice would be to accept her choice, as at the moment it is still her pony, & walk away. Good luck with the next one you are going to view, if you want back over this summer & hack about with some basic schooling, then maybe we ought to talk.

OK so maybe I am lucky, but generally if I wanted to produce £200 on the spot I can find a way of doing it even if it means using a bit of overdraft for a few days until wages go in.

However despite this I would not really go along with putting down £200 on a £500 pony where I may run into problems with conditions attached i.e. the skin issue. As much as I would love to believe all sellers would stick to the conditions outlined in the receipt, what if I want my deposit back (as per agreement) and end up in a dispute? Sure if I have been careful I can produce my written receipt and go the CCJ route but such a headache! If I had put £50 down then I'd probably just shrug my shoulders and hope they spend the £50 on treatment for the pony.

If I was the seller I do not think I would assume they had no money to look after the pony I would just assume they just did not want to hand over a substantial deposit. TBH I wonder if you have not heard back as the owner may in fact know the pony has a specific ongoing skin condition thus does not want to sell to someone who will have the pony tested before sale completion.

As to those being a bit blunt, how about the seller who has a pony with a potentially untreated condition?? I would at least be satisfied that the prospective purchaser has noticed the problem and would want to find out more i.e. is planning to treat and seriously considering the ongoing cost of any treatment...

Hope all goes well with the next viewing and 10% is a fair deposit so stick to your guns!

I think the seller is hedging her bets, thinking she might sell the mare sooner to someone else with her being pretty cheap and she's keeping you on the back burner in case no one else comes along

J, in all honesty I think you should give the mare up. You already have didi man to deal with, so this one should be for you to have some fun on! How did I know you wouldn't go through a summer without a neddie??? I think you should go for the gelding - if he is nice that is and offer 10% again. H I didn't even leave a deposit, Max £500 and he was 5k and D left £500 and he was 8k. I would like chapter and verse tomorrow after you have seen this gelding please!! and please ignore the comments that are uncalled for xx

I want to hear an update to so will be looking for the thread :P
As for "that part of the forum" ignore it...:D

ive got a feeling this summer is going to be a pretty brilliant one. and M, your right. there was no way i was going to get through this summer NOT riding. if it got that bad, i would be at your yard begging to ride beautiful Duke!!! and i will ignore them. at least i have 2 people who will be exited with me if i do end up getting this horse tomorrow :D

Go for the new one, try and forget the old pony, Its hard when you find one you really like but just not worth the hassle if the owners are being difficult (and in my opinion they are!)

Best of luck with this other one tho!

- and i am currently skint too! but am saving madly for a new horse I couldn't find £200 probably right now for a deposit as i have overspent recently! but if it was a vet bill or something i would beg steal or borrow so can sympathize completely
