should i just give up with this horse?

Sweetheart , you don't have to justify yourself to anyone ,it's all swings and roundabouts with horses anyway, mines had his back checked , teeth done , jabs up to date all in one month so I'm a bit skint now too , doesn't mean to say I can't afford a horse.. hope you find what you're looking for .

Echo this!! I also have had to put some aside for lorry plating and tax so Ic ouldn't get my hands on £200 without using a credit card, which I certainly wouldn't do for cash on a pony that may have a problem

I would go look at the gelding sounds like you could do more with him too.

I would give up on the mare, I would be wary of putting a £200 deposit down on a horse that is only £500 anyway, I'd expect to pay a deposit of £50 at that price, £200 seems very steep IMO.
Hope it goes well with the other ned and that you find what you're looking for! :)

I have 2 horses and couldnt afford £200 out right now. Its madness to think that everyone with horses must be rich? Infact id even put it out there that those of us that make sacrifices to have them probs are the better owners??!!! We appreciate them more! Urgghhh!!

Anyway, leave this pony alone. I think someone should trust you if you say you are going to pick up a pony then you should go and get it and not have to pay a ridiulous deposti for a very cheap horse :/ I wouldnt want to buy iff of someone that couldnt trust me that much either. A bit different if you wanted to hold him for like a month. But for the sake of a week id walk away!

If i was selling, i would be more bothered that my horse would have a mum that would love her to bits rather than buy her a new rug every month.

I wouldn't want to put down £200 on a £500 horse either, it is a bit much.

Just be clear what the deposit is. Is it part-payment,in which case it might just be acceptable and if the sale doesn't go through you have it all back. Or does the seller consider it a non-returnable deposit. Make sure you have the facts and don't assume anything.

Although the second horse sounds better for you really.

just an update. that PBA's owner texted me saying she would accept a £100 deposit. i think i will reply saying im veiwing another horse tomorrow and ill let you know. im not happy putting down a £100 deposit.

Some people on here are so bloody rude! I completly understand you i have 2 horses and some months are great, others you struggle, but you always manage. As long as you know you have the money no one can judge you on that.
£50 deposit on a £500 filly of this type seems completly reasonable. I think its so unfair how people are judging on the money you offered, not the loving owner or the caring home you have avavible. As long as at the least, and when your most struggling you can afford all the essensials you go for it. About the pony- If shes wasting your time dont chase something that keeps getting out your reach-things happen for a reason xxx

BSJAlove - I saw your post and thought you was giving up, and then find you have another horse!! I really need to keep up!!

Anyway, if its meant to be it will happen. Let her be, if she wants to sell and you are offering her the money (regardless of the deposit) then she'll call you, and if not, its her loss!! Go see the other horse and if he is what you want, then make an offer.
The bald patches would concern me TBH, and possibly put me off. I also think its off for an owner to advertise a horse with obvious ill health, and not even offer to get the swabs done for you!!

Good luck with viewing!!

I don't understand-you're not happy putting down a certain amount of money on a horse, what will you do when you have to pay the full amount all that have said this? To me a deposit shouldn't involve a negotiation. Either you pay the required deposit and reserve the horse, or you pay the full price and pick it up a week later, or you don't pay either and take your chances it will be gone in a week.

If you have current horses you can afford but have no spare, fine. Just don't try and stretch that money to fit another one in and get upset when other people don't want to deal with you!

Firstly, I have seen BSJAlove's horses (well, Rupert and a past horse) and they are very well loved and have everything they need and more! I had a go on Rupert and in fact, I'm still thinking about "borrowing" him. ;)

I think the mare's skin issue could be quite problematic (Noah's skin has gone mad and it's quite stressful trying to figure it out!) and it doesn't sound like the owner is too keen to deal with you. I would maybe let it slide and see the gelding and tell us how it goes! Then we can meet somewhere for summer hacking, yay! :D

SusieT in case you have noticed, no-one is bothered about what you think, everyone agrees you are rude and unpleasant so why bother re enforcing other people's view of you!! Bsja good luck tomorrow, take no notice of stupid people, pick the nicer of the 2 horses and don't forget we will want photo's :D

I would be worried if someone was struggling to find the money if I was the seller, however it is noboby elses business, so dont justify yourself to other people on here. Personally i would expect £200 deposit, regardless of the overall cost. £50 is not enough to stop someone stringing you along as a seller. A deposit should indicate a commitment to buy, and at £50 its not enough to stop someone changing their mind andleaving you in limbo.

Sorry to sound negative but I have to agree with some of the other posters.

If I was selling a horse then I'd want to know that the new owner could comfortably afford e.g. 6,000k for colic surgery or similar at very short notice. (Which might be necessary even with an insured horse due to exclusions.)

Id like to meet the perseon who has 6,000k to pull out there backside when needed.

I find some of the people on here quite unrealistic.

I plan where my money is going to be spent each month to ensure everything that needs to be paid for is covered. Any extra is a bonus and if the OP hadnt planned on buying straight away and the right horse has come along im not suprised she didnt have a spare £200 just before payday.

This forum is starting to get rather stuck up and snobby!

I think 10% is right for a non returnable deposit.

I don't think anyone should have to explain and justify their finances to anyone on here, and certainly not to someone selling a horse.

i dont 'just' get buy. its just that when i have spare cash at the end of the month. like any other young person with no responsibilities, i spend it. this month i got a new saddle and spoiled me and my other half. if i get another horse, i wont be spending that money on me. it will be spent on the horse and ill still have money for me to have fun with. to me, £50 is a deposit. its 10% of the price and its what im willing to pay. im not parting with £200 to find out the filly has a skin condition. if i did have £200 i still wouldnt put it down on her.

as i said, the owner has said she will happily take £100 which i can afford but im not putting down. my limit is £50. if it all c*cks up, im not too much out of pocket. so no, i havent put her off. dont tell me i cant afford another horse when i know i can! its none of your buisness or anyone elses. i hate being judged, and ive done nothing wrong. my horses are all fit happy and healthy and my third horse will be the same.

Sod all the nonsense about whether or not you can afford the deposit/pony/any pony. The original question was whether you should leave the pony, and you should DEF leave the pony if it has dodgy bald patches! Why on earth is someone selling a pony with dodgy bald patches???!!! Shouldn't maybe the owner spend some money on sorting that out first?!

There are loads of fantastic bargain summer projects out there - get a nice one, not a scabby one ;)

Good luck with whatever you get :)

and hollyW, you can steal rups if i can steal belle!!! long summer hacks when i get horse number 3. all day long summer hacks!

deranged and rude!

BSJAlove, STOP justifying yourself to rude, ignorant, unrealistic people who have no business questioning your finances, it is none of their business. I have 6 horses so I suppose I need £36k in the bank in case of colic! Personally, from what you have said re the filly, I would not have been leaving any deposit on her, there are plenty of healthy youngsters about without buying someone elses vets fees.

Go look at the gelding and the best of luck with him. Keep us posted.

^^^^^^ this!!! :D

dont worry ill keep you all updated. await a full report tomorrow :) she just sent me loads of pics and vids of him and he looks sooooo nice! so fingers crossed!

Well I am probably not the only one who can spot the buyer who would string them along saying they'll just 'pay next week' or who has been strung along as such. Hence if you can't afford the price when it is due to be paid, you would not be invited back to get my horse. It gives a bad impression to the seller-and when you get as defensive as you have on here, that suggests there is something to be defensive about.
Then again, I am not dealing in the bottom end of the market, so wouldn't expect my buyers to have money troubles. Just wait a month if you need to to save up all that 'spare cash' you have and then this won't happen again.
As for weird bald patches-could be anything, as a buyer I would have the seller sorting that out or providing a written vets report prior to buying but it wouldn't worry me overly..

£200 deposit on a £500 pony is a hell of a lot, £50 would be ample!
I too wouldnt have £200 spare to put down as a deposit, doesnt mean I cannot afford my horse or to care for him, some people
I think its meant to be though & it looks like this is a sign telling you not to go with this one, I'm sure there are others around.
Good luck :)
