Okay, so going to uni september 2010, hopefully to Leeds

I live about 30-40minutes bus drive away and want to live in the halls because of the experience and I know I will get left out without going to them.
But I dont know what to do with my horse I'll either have to sell him, put him on part/full loan or on full livery.
Anyway, do you think I should live in the halls?
What would you suggest would be best to do with the horse?

I'd pop this in Soapbox, as you'll get a better response.

But for what it's worth - yes, most definately live in Halls. It's such an important part of University life in your first year.

Re the horse - take him with you.

yes, definitely live in Halls. what course are you doing? if it's artsy you might well have time to ride daily (i did English Lit and had loads of spare time!) but if it's science or engineering based you might not have much spare time at all, in which case loaning or part loaning might be a better idea.

Definatley live in halls, its the most awesome fun ever! I went to uni a few years ago and stayed in halls, uni was 6hour drive and 2 hour boat journey away so was lucky to be able to take my horse with me and put her on full livery 5 mins drive away! Was the most lovely little yard with great owners. It was the best experience ever and would go back anyday. Good luck.

I'm doing history, so I think I'll have quite a few hours spare, and as its not too far away I think I could cope with going to see him 3/4 days a week & having him on part loan

I live 20 mins from uni but live in halls definetly the right decision. Almost all the people I have met that live locally but stayed at home regret it, and many ended up putting there names on the waiting list for accomodation.

Horse wise, my uni for example doesn't allow students to have cars of campus, so check this out as obviously if you can' you'd need to find stabling that is accessible for public transport.

If you are doing History then chances are you won't have many lectures or tutorials. That can be quite isolating if you don't get yourself a social life

(I did Politics and History and spent most of my study time on my own in the library). As I said in SB, living in halls is a good way to get to know a few people quickly - even if you don't become best pals, it's a good start.

why can't you do both? I'd definately say live in halls, at least for the first year. I went to uni close to home but 1st 2 years lived there and made some great mates and had amazing time.

I'd say put the horses on part livery so you don't have to do the journey twice a day but if you have a car its not too far to go every eve?

I do History at the moment and only actually have 8 hours tops contact time. So plenty of spare time. I too only lived 50min from Uni so I went home on a fri and came back on mon so had a good weekend with the horse. But I didnt put her on loan as I worked out a deal with my lovely yard owner. But defo stay, you need to make friends and have a social life too

Enjot the uni experience - its the whole package.. you can always come back to horses but there will never be another time when you are young and a uni!

What uni are you going to?
I was in halls at UCLAN in my first year. It was a living nightmare. I went for the cheapest ones as thought i would meet more people and make more friends. There were 28 people on my floor. Of which 4 of them were nice. The rest spent every single hour of the night/day running around, stealing, screaming, knocking on doors and running off (yes, they are supposed to be becoming adults by then). Eating food, breaking stuff, doing huge amounts of drugs and generally being like cave men/women. They shut those halls down after our year because they were such a state.

However, most people have been very happy in different hall situations like cluster flats. with 5-8 people sharing a kitchen etc rather than 14 per kitchen like i was in.
If i were to go back then i would go into something like that.
Also the people running around, eating everyone elses food, never washing a plate their whole time there and doing lots of drugs clearly had an absolute ball.

Just to let you know the other side, but don't worry- i've never seen halls as bad as those i was in at any of my friends uni's

And take the horse if you can, it will be nice to have something to balance out the work and you would probably find someone to share him if you struggled for time.

As everyone else has said - definitely live in halls.

If you join the riding club, you should be able to find some other students who have had to sell/loan their own horses who would be willing to part-loan your horse which should help on time/money.

Think if being in university like being at work. You get up nice and early and do pony - go to work - go back later and do pony again.

I know how you feel, I had to do the same thing, so all I can say is either sell him to a friend or loan im, you will regret not living in halls, so do it, ypu will not ever regret it

good idea- i would have loved someone with a horse to part loan in my first 2 years of uni! (doing medicine means time a bit too restricted after year3!) live in halls as long as you dont mind dodgy food if your catered & fire alarms at 2am! its a great way to meet people though & am glad i did it in 1st year even though i wouldn't do it again

Oh yes the 2am fire alarms - standing outside in sub-zero temperatures smoking and watching the most unattractive firemen in London turn up - no idea where all the nice firemen were. Oh and everyone seeing you without your make-up.

The only entertaining part was seeing all the embarassed faces coming put of the "wrong" halls and sneaking back across campus!

I had my undergrad Uni as my 1st choice, exceeded the required grades by loads, but still did not get in to Halls, so don't assume you will even get in. They will give you a low priority as you are within commuting distance.

When I was doing my 3rd degree, I lived in for 1 year and hated every minute. It was like a prison cell. Small room, communal toilets and showers. All they needed was slopping out in the morning... The noise at night was awful. 1 of my neighbours used to delight in keeping me awake until 3am, until I started waking him up when I did - 6am.
