As some off you know I love a challenge off a quirky horse so iv been offered a 17hh 5yr old ish mare for meat money. She was broken and riding well and started to jump and the owners than put her on loan to work with their other youngster. She's since had 4 loan homes each giving her back because she's started rearing. The owner is now scared off riding her due to this and has turned her away. She also won't hack out on her own. Part off me would like to take her to re start her and work with her but I'm thinking winter is neally here which means it's always bloody dark which won't help. She would be sold from the field but welcome to speak to old loan homes about her behaviour. Interested in what you all think?

i'd have a chat with loanee's first and then decide. You can then assess how bad this rearing is and what triggers it.

Why not?

i've just re-homed a 16.3 ISH that i got through a fellow HHO member..who has "issues"..

i've sorted his groundwork insecurities and his new home is going to work with his ridden issues.

he is only 7, so i thought why not?.....

if she is genuine meat money, you cant lose, can you?

I think you had to speak to the old loaners first to fully assess her issues.
Then its a simple question of whether you feel you have the skill, time and whether you feel she could come good. She's young enough to go right back to basics, and that is in her favour.

If she was a much older horse, my opinion would be walk away as there is much less chance of her coming good, also consider the risk of getting seriously hurt. A rearer would be an absolute no go for me, its just something I wont take the risk on.

Another way to look at it is you could always give her a go, and if you think she can't come right or is dangerous, then her fate will still be the same, but at least she got a second chance x

Yep she meat money and only young so hopefully could work her through it but will talk to old loan homes as well and suss them out. I just think for such a young horse hopefully she will come right. Could be something simple as Ill fitted saddle, teeth, Insecure etc so will ring people up and suss it all out. If she come right she would be sold on but the owners know this iv told them

Any chance that over winter you can give her winter off due to weather/ dark nights e.t.c. then re-start her in spring and take her out to shows to aide the sale? At 5 years old and learnt behanviour from loan homes, sounds a pretty easy project on the surface of it all.

I would go for it but maybe turn her out for the Winter to chill for a bit, then re-start again in the Spring.

ETA - Sorry cross posted with the above!
