show jumpers, what is the perpose of...

Originally I believe it was to drown out some of the noise from the crowds at big competitions but I think now it has become a bi of a fashion statement too :)
 
Usually for horses that are sensitive to sound, and in extreme cases the put cotton wool in ears the fly veil over the top, works wonders and why let a horse be upset by something if you can avoid it :D

My first jumping pony used to get stage fright if there was more than about 20 people watching. He was so easily distracted by chatting, crisp packets rustling, juice cans opening etc. When I began jumping at home pony internationals it was suggested that I stuff ponys ears with cotton wool and put a fly veil over the top. It made a huge difference to him and we used it any time we were at a big show (scope festival, HOYS etc) as it kept him much more chilled and easier to ride. Over time he got better as he learned to cope with noise but we ended up keeping the fly veil just because I liked how it looked!
 
I only wear one in competition if there are flies about as my horse hates the flies around her head. I use one all the time in the summer when riding and turnout masks with ears when not riding.
 
I use mine as it cuts out background noise when competing and also in the summer at outside shows it makes a noticable difference to him shaking his head for the flies.

also its navy and green which matches my jacket :D

That is interesting because there are often ''odd'' noises in indoor arenas particularly when windy--creaking doors, and rain on the roofs can sound very loud and cause distractions etc

Yes very true, Id love to use them indoors aswell. Unfortuantly this is the rule at the moment, although what is classed as "summer months" I dont know as British weather can be hard to predict!
 
They are sold exclusively for aerodymanics.

Yes it is true ladies and gentlefolk, when you cover a horses ear, the wind stops coming out of it's bottom therefore producing a more streamlined form over jumps.

The added benefit of lessened emissions is a bonus as it contributes to the carbon neutratitty of the horse in question.

We all know how important carbon neutratitties are in this age of greenliness.

So, do buy yourself a matchy-matchy fly-veil (so aptlynamed because your horse will literally FLY over anything) I hear Robonsons are having a sale this week.

LOL. WOW. Erm....there are flies in the atmosphere? An object bigger than a fly will collide with said bigger object?

For instance. Car windshield VS flies. Now, I must take a moment to explain that the flies are not flying as fast as the cars....it is merely that there are flies in the air and the car will be travelling through the air also....and collide with metaphorical flies.

I repeat. WOW.
