I'm looking for advice on showing my coloured gelding, in fact - showing in general! I think the last 'showing' I did was Family Pony...since then I've been a bit more focused on jumping as I haven't had something suitable for showing.

Now I've acquired Rupert, people have told me I should get him out showing this summer - he turns 4 in a few weeks. Trouble is, I don't know the first place to start - first off, what sort of classes should I enter for? And is it best to start with inhand? He's a massive show off, so I think he'd look smart in the ring, although is a bit of a live wire so I think I'd rather start off in hand!

He's 15hh at the moment, has one blue eye. He's not heavy really, no idea what breed he is but is probably most similar to a section D - similar amount of feather in the summer. Here are some pics - one of him being ridden a few weeks ago, one of him last summer.

Any advice on classes, turnout, what to do with mane, feathers etc would be great!!

You can go straight for the coloured classes as well as the ones for his 'type'. Here lies the problem. Are you wanting to show him 'native' or are you wanting to keep him less hairy and perhaps put him in hunters as well. If you keep him native you will be restricted to coloured classes only.

He's lovely :)

Thank you! Well I don't know - I'd like to
lose the feathers as there aren't really enough to matter, but I'd also quite like to keep his mane long rather than pulled (definitely not hogged!). If his legs are clipped, can you still show in coloured classes, and if his mane is long can he still go in other classes?!

Really, he's too small to show as a hunter, and you can enter cob classes ( as long as they arre not 'show cobs'. Those are a very different type.) You can do workers with him as a coloured native as well.

Personally, I would keep him hairy, and turn him out as a Welsh D. Really, if, he's hairy, then he's hairy - it's incorrect to clip the legs but keep the mane and tail full. He's got feather, so wash it, fluff it and show it off :D

Try checking out www.theshowring.info

There is a lot of information on that site, and the forums are full of friendly prople who are extremely experienced in showing.

Hes really nice, I think you will be best off showing him in coloured classes as category wise he doesnt really fall into any other class, unless he is reg as PB Welsh [he looks C or D type]. Check his measurement, I have both 147 and 155 and they come as a rough guide to my nose bridge and above eye height, Im 5ft5 so I guess you are pretty tall if hes 15hh. Specifically hes a coloured native type and should keep the feather and tidy his mane length about 6" and dont plait> I think hed do nicely in the sport horse/pony too as looks as if he has a good movement. Have a browse on the BSPS site which will give you more information than I can here. Best of luck with him I think you will do well!

I'd show him in coloured non native pony classes - that way you can lose the feathers, pull his mane & tail & show him as a hunter pony (cos of his size). The native coloureds have loads & loads of feather etc!!

Clothing wise, tweed jacket, tie, blue hat with flesh coloured harness - straight cut showing saddle, discrete numnah, flat caverson noseband!

Native coloureds dont have loads of feather, they have the same amount as a native pony type C or D as they are often crossbred with this in the bloodline. At the moment this pony has nowhere near enough body to be a hunter, he may mature up to that.

He is a coloured native, so that's the class he should be in. He absolutely screams 'Welsh'...... There is no way he would be confused with a Traditional.
The amount of feather depends on the native cross - I have a Dales cross, so she has Dales type feather.

He is a lovely native type, please keep him hairy. :D

He is lovely.
I'd have a look on YouTube at some showing videos and see what sort of classes have similar types (you can message the video poster and ask)
I like his mane and feathers. There may be youngster showing classes which would suit as he is only 4, or have a look at smaller shows which are usually more friendly towards people in not exactly the 'correct' class (in my experience).
Is he CHAPS registered? You could always email them for advice with a photo.
Good luck, he looks fab.

Thanks everyone, lots of helpful pointers! For native coloured classes, does it matter that I don't have a clue what breed he is?! You don't have to prove that they have welsh or similar in them?
He's not CHAPS registered, but I may do that soon..

IdoShowing...the pictures you provided a link to just reinforce what the majority have said some have more mane and feather than OP pony but some look very much the same No way is this pony a plaited type. Please keep feather on OP!!! Good luck , let us know how well you have done!!!
