Hi, I have a 5yo warmblood x irish bay gelding by carnival drum. He stands at about 16.3 at the moment, pushing 17 hands and is still growing! He has good conformation and with correct feeding and schooling etc im told hed make a very good show horse. Although i do enjoy a bit of showing ive never done it to a high sstandard and was wonderin the rules/ judges opinions or views on him as he has a white stocking finishing just above the knee on his off fore. He also has white socks on both near side legs and plain black on the off hind. Would this affect his placing? He would be aimed for hunter, working hunter. Im told if he goes perfectly and has perfect manners etc this should not affect him but im wondering if theres any showing experts that could help me out? Thanks, Lou x

Wait, wait..just so I know I'm understanding properly; you're asking if his having white socks would affect his placings?

It is down the judge at the end of the day so it is hard to say,

My instructor/person I show for is also a very highly renown judge and has over 60 years experience and I know she HATES socks that come over the knee,

but other judges don't mind, and it also depends on the ride he gives ect he might give a fantastic ride and a judge loves him, but some might be put off as hunters are liked for being plain ie. favor no white what so ever ha ha!!!!

The only way you will know is to get him out there, take him to some shows and see how you do!!! And ALWAYS ask what the judge thought of them/how you can improve when they hand you your rosette- what ever your placing!!!

ok thanks. Its very frustrating as he has a lot of potential to do dressage, showjumping etc. So i didnt want to put him through all the work/trainin to see him suffer. However i think il gve it a try! x

At the end of the day, if he jumps clean, gives a good ride and has good conformation - they can't knock him!!

White stockings tend to give his breeding away - ie that he's "foreign" as most traditional hunter breeding eg UK or Irish tend to have plainer colours - not so much chrome

some judges still have a prejudice against WBs in hunter classes - although they still place the ones they don't know the breeding of!

The only disadvantage I could see is that his markings aren't symmetrical and so would draw the eye - if they have even white markings it can be considered "smarter"

Yes its a bit of a pain! He has the irish in him which doesnt make him look so 'foreign' but i think the legs not being symmetricail would catcg the eye, for the wrong reasons! Il see how he goes and how the judges value him. xxxxxx

But if he goes nicely it will also make you stand out against the plain bays, so the judges will remember you.
And plenty of chestnuts with 4 white socks and a big blaze have done very well in hunter classes at the highest level. Just more unusual to see a bay with a lot of white as for some reason chestnut allows the sabino gene to be more prevelant
