I need your advice on correct turnout for ridden hunter and working hunter showing classes.

Have done m+m and whp before but never any showing on horses.

So what should I wear for ridden hunter?
I have a brown tweed jacket, beige breeches, long black boots and a navy hat with leather harness. What could shirt and tie/stock should I wear?
Should I wear spurs and if so are dummy spurs acceptable? My horse won’t need any encouragement in going forwards! I could always wear normal spurs but she’s never been ridden in them before.
I’m guessing I should wear the same for working hunter?
Oh, and gloves. Is brown ok?

And then for the horse.
She has a brown saddle with brown leather girth and the saddle is fitted with a brown half numnah, is this ok?
As for bridle she’s currently ridden in a loose ring with cavesson. I have both a Pelham and also my mum’s lovely double bridle so will try her in these but if she doesn’t like them will a snaffle be acceptable?
And then for jumping in wh would a snaffle be ok? I’m not sure if she would happily jump in a Pelham/double as she is likely to take offence if I do something stupid with double reins :o.
Also for wh I would like to use a martingale. Is a breastplate or martingale preferred or does it not normally matter?

Sorry for all the questions, life was much simpler with the pony, he just went in a snaffle, cavesson and no boots/martingale etc for everything!

Thanks in advance and sorry for the boring thread.

Hiya,

M&M and hunter/whp are all the same for turnout exept that it is correct to wear spurs in a ridden hunter class. If your horse doesn't need them, you can always wear dummy spurs. So tweed, shirt and tie. If your tweed is brown/green then brown gloves are fine but for blue tweeds i think that black looks better.

Any bit with a double rein is prefered in an open class but if she doesn't go well in it, stick to your snaffle. You can use a martingale in WH. If you use brushing boots then they have to be taken off before the show phase.Your saddle etc sounds fine.

Good luck

This is very helpful for me too!!

I have borrowed a nice black tweed jacket, (never done showing before), but I have black or brown gloves and long black or brown boots, tack is brown and horse is grey, he's 14 so very flea bitten now but with dark mane and tail. Do not possess a double bridle or even a pelham, always ride in snaffle so does that exclude me right away? It's only Kilmacolm local show so is it really a big deal? But then again I don't want to look a total plonker as there are bound to be people there I know.

Can I wear a stock rather than shirt and tie and a black hat?

Any advice gratefully received.

It's not really correct for a lady to wear a black hat and you should certainly not wear black gloves - traditionally these were worn when in mourning and you wouldn't have been doing anything as "frivolous" as riding at a show when in mourning (!)
A double is correct (or pelham) but not the end of the world if you ride in a snaffle - but NO bling/velvet browbands/padded nosebands.
Black boots
Black tweed??? I didn't know you could get it - better with brown or green tweed with overcheck or a nice Keeper's tweed.
Shirt and tie - definitely NOT a stock in the show ring (except for Evening Performances or Royal shows)

The jacket, definitely, is nearly black - sort of charcoal maybe, it's a Mears pure wool jacket and really nice, in fact it seems it's the only thing that might be right on the day!! Would go very well against the grey of the boyo.

I didn't think brown and black "went" so that is why I thought black gloves might look better.

Um, this is getting harder, my "proper" hat is not a fixed peak so I dug up my old black Charles Owen sj hat, didn't really want to go and buy a blue one.

Might be better just to not turn up.... but thank you very much for your advice - as well to know what is and what is not right. As I have never doen it I am as well to know what the etiquette is.

Thank you

dont be disheartened!! at a local level, judges appreciate smart turnout and effort instead of what strictly etiquette, just go and enjoy yourself!

p.s i would wear black hat and gloves with a charcoal tweed aswell
