Yes its another one of these posts, but I want to see if I'm over reacting!

Moved to a new yard in November 2012, it sounded great and looked great! So you guessed it I moved, I chose DIY livery, with private paddock (£25pm extra), hay and straw not bad.........however, I have been buying hay and only using it slowly as my lad is a "bed eater" anyway, its a yard that doesnt allow outside hay, straw, haylage, etc. Fine by me, but I have one problem, when the hay is poor quality and the straw is wet, I think I should complain, which I havent yet!
Anyway, my birthday just passed and my non-horsey Dad bought me a small bale of hay, I thought great! I filled a haynet and took it to the yard and was going to tell YO would it be alright to use, its only one bale and I have ordered two off him this week. Anyway went down to the paddock bought my lad in, OH was sat very angry and told me YO was near our lock up and I repeat and quote "GET THAT *******ING STUFF OFF MY YARD NOW! I'VE TOLD YOU ABOUT THIS BEFORE!"
1: He didnt give my OH a chance to explain
2: He knows my OH is non horsey
3: I've not once bought outside hay/straw/etc in!
I'm curious now, as I have never bought any outside hay on, but he is accusing me of this since I got there, I want to know where does the hay I order from him go then???

Other things that bug me are, horses are constantly getting out of paddocks, either jumping them or barging through electric fencing (that is NEVER on)
Apparently they also "look" out for your horse when you arent there and call you in an emergency, I found my lad down in his stable with colic!
I was told by them I couldnt use the school to help the colic shift so had to walk round the car park!!
Then we were cleaning out van out and we put some things on the floor to clean and YO was there telling us we couldnt keep it there!! It was going back in once I'd tidied the rubbish out!

My lad has not settled and is a complete change of character, he's gone from being a steady plod, who liked being fussed and brushed, to a nut case while out hacking, kicking his stable walls, sweating alot in his stable, jogging on the spot, really bad head shy-ness, this seems to have got worse since I have been there.

Am I being rediculous??? I intend on leaving this yard after only being there from November.
It feels like YO is stalking me and I feel very un-easy about this, thankfully a friend has a yard and is letting me move there hopefully in the next few days!

Views?

I would already have left! Before you leave make sure you put the YO straight that you've never brought in any outside Hay/Straw in and it's completely out of order to speak to your OH like that. Plus not allowing your horse in the school when it's colicking?! Ridiculous!

From the colic point alone I'd be moving asap. Character change is not good beyong usual settling time. Lump the rest in and I'd be moving before horse or I lamped YO.

I really don't get where some Yo's get the impression that they can talk to people (let alone paying clients!) the way some of them do!

Leave! It sounds awful!

Leave. Now. You dont pay people for service like that. YO's seem to think they are doing folk a favour having their horses there. Its a business and your paying them for a service, its not a favour.

Defo move - It's really out of order to speak to you or anyone like that. Even if you did break a yard rule, they could have politely reminded you without using that language and being so aggressive.

Perhaps its a personality clash between you and the YO as he sounds fed up. I wouldn't be cleaning out my car on the yard either, it seems a bit cheeky.

Depending on the car park, I don't see a problem with walking the horse there. On a former yard, the car park and surrounding area was used on quite a few occasions by liveries walking horses with colic.

However, it would be a good idea to move asp as you are not happy there.

If you buy very little hay, its possible that's why she assumed it wasn't the first time. And tbf, many yo's rely on the profit from selling hay etc, rather than just charging more rent. Although no excuse for her manner. If its diy & they say they'll keep a look out, then I would assume that meant if they notice anything when they are passing, rather than proper checks, so I wouldn't blame them for not noticing the colic if they weren't around. Not letting you use the arena isn't on though. And I agree with pearlsasinger re the box. But the manner of yo & the fencing would make me move anyway.

Agree with above poster; there will always be two sides to a coin and as a DIY YO myself I know that whilst I do keep a cursory check (easy as I live on-site) - its always easy to miss something. However........ the "keeping an eye" isn't in the livery contract! Its something I would do naturally anyway; like keeping an eye out in case there's a sheep on its back (we have a tenant who rents the grass from us and keeps his sheep in our field - so are well used to putting sheep upright again!).

But I think its a little unfair to totally blame the YO for not noticing the colic: and TBH IF the school was in use for say a lesson (which someone would then have paid for and as well as might have paid for instruction) then IF the car park was the only place to walk the horse around, then that was unfortunate but necessary.

The livery contract should state clearly what the arrangements are for liveries, i.e. to provide their own hay/fodder OR the yard supplies it and at what price (um, PLEASE don't tell me you moved in without a contract???). So if the OH brought some hay into the yard, then that could well cause a problem if other liveries see it and make assumptions. Not that I'm excusing the YO for rudeness to OP's OH, this is unacceptable.

It sounds like the OP's horse is unsettled and unhappy in this yard and is telling her what she should now do!!! Unfortunately yards like this give all of us who are YO's a bad name.

You sound really unhappy so yes you should move.

YO sounds very particular and OTT.

Yes if they want you to buy only their products fine, but they should be quality, not wet and dusty.

Not letting you explain and just shounting it just plain rude.
Not acceptable.

Well rest assured I do have a new yard waiting for me, just waiting on transport. I never really thought about it, but alot have people on the yard told me about the turnover on the yard and I infact found out that the turnover rate is very high!!
As for the school when I found my lad it was 630am and there was a nice thick layer all over the yard (and many places more round the country)
Thankfully before I leave I will explain why we dont buy/use alot of hay and I will leave it at that, appart from mentioning her customer services, then I will be leaving!

I think if nothing else you need to listen to your horse.

ps By van do you mean horsebox? There's a difference between cleaning out a random vehicle which doesn't belong at the yard and cleaning out one that does.

Glad you are moving :) If I saw someone walking a colic horse round the car park I would advise them to go in the school in case the horse went down.

I can understand the YO getting ticky about hay being brought in but it should be discussed in a professional manner, a yard is a yard, not boarding school or prison where people are inmates

Is this yard in essex? it sounds very similar to a yard I was at. YO seems like a nutter I would leave and tell them why. Good luck :)

Sounds horrific!!

I am sure horses are a little like humans in that they sometimes just "don't like" places and their characters' can change. Undoubtedly he will be picking up on tension coming from you as it sounds like you are edgy when you are there and perhaps there is a funny smell or an odd noise that you are unaware of which is unsettling him. They just pick up on vibes.

Good luck at the new place.... let us know whether he is more settled???

Move! If I had a lesson booked in the school and saw a horse with colic being walked round a car park I'd stop my lesson. What if it went down on the Tarmac? Something's are more important. And a horse with colic is one of them. I have been on some lovely yards and left because my horse didn't settle. Yours sounds unhappy there.

Re the buying in of hay...... While looking at livery yards myself, I've come across a few who don't allow outside haylage to be bought in and supply it themselves. This is great if they stock enough and its stored properly and of decent quality. However, if I was on a yard which had v poor quality or dusty hay etc I would feel quite justified in getting my own, at least temporarily till they got better stuff in. I doubt the yard would volunteer to pay my vet bills resulting from any respiratory disorder etc that may result...... I also know of a yard that ran out of hay and still wouldn't let liveries buy any in to feed until the yard restocked!

Glad your moving, what kind of yard makes a horse with colic walk around a car park, when there is a empty school, which is safer.

Well I've just been to sort my lad out and he's tucked up for the night, thankfully I'm just waiting on transport which shouldnt be too long!! (Does little dance)
The hay & straw is stored in a 3 walled, holey barn, the open side, (when it rains) is like a water fall!
Plenty of other liveries have asked me what happened (I didnt tell anyone at all, knowing full well it would go round like wild fire) and we explained, they all agreed it was wrong of her, they even shared there run-in's, with YO, who apparently likes to nit pick! Also everyone is asking if I'm leaving? (havent told anyone again, but again things are being spread round)
I'm thankful, about my old yard, might not have the facilities and be a small distance away, but the big hay bales are wrapped and only cost £15!! And they are happy to take me back.
In the end I'm looking out for who I look after and have fun with.
The van we drive, is much like the small vans what royal mail do deliveries in, we where bagging up the rubbish and putting it in the allocated bins they have provided.
I'm not a rule breaker, I abide rules like how I abide, by the law.
I'm not a liar and detest being called one!
I hate it when people get in my face for no reason, but I get really wound up when people get in my OH face! (Especially if its got nothing to do with him)
Trust me if I caught her having ago at him, when she did, she would be sat on her a***!!
I've told my OH (when coming out of the yard) it felt like I was being stalked while there, it wasnt a nice feeling and I can only imagine how my poor lad feels when he gets my vibes, so for the both of us, we are doing the right thing!

Again, Thanks for the lovely posts!

PS I've told OH we are starting the lottery again, and when we win (millions) I will be opening up a lovely livery yard, with free livery for the first year and probably ask many of the girls who arent happy to come to mine :P
