I joined this forum after reading the threads about single trailers. I am considering buying one as I sold my old trailer a year ago as I thought my pony would have to retire(big mistake!). I had a richardson rossette with no partions as pony hates these and wont travel with other horses. I passed my test yonks before 1997 so that isnt and issue.

I have a reasonably large diesal car (saab 93) which is legal to tow 1600, but I think going of its weight would be safer to tow about 1250 max. Pony ways 400 at his podgiest so I am considering the Ivor williams single as the new ones are v.low weight but only 30 cm narrower than their doubles.

Towing will be to dressage and show venues local to me and with hard standing.

Anyone any experiences of these trailiers?

Yes Ive had a couple of 401s and never had any problems at all, pony liked them as they were quite wide and they are dead easy to tow as they are that bit narrower than the car - so you know if your car will fit through the gap, so will your trailer

Yes i've hadf a 401, i loved it never had a problem no horse ever had any issue loading or travelling in it. i towed mine with a swb rav4 which also towed 1600, hade no probs and i used to tow my 16.1 tb.

I agree with Cobden, we have a 401 and love it all. They are stable and the horses we have had in it and have all been fine. You can even tack up in them they are that roomy.

Apparently legally the car needs to be capable (within its manufacturers braked towing limit) of towing the fully laden weight of the trailer NOT the weight you put in it. Otherwise everytime a trailer is pulled over by Vosa it would need to be taken to the weighbridge to ensure it was being towed legally. As it is the laden weight of the 401 is 1600Kg so right on your cars limit. I've seen a few being trailed around and all seem good, good luck. Also look at the requisite single as these are lighter.

My friend has a single Ifor...she's very kindly taken my gelding to the vets recently. I can not stress what a bad traveller he is, especially in trailers.

But in her single he travelled SO WELL, no noise, no mad sweating, perfectly!

We've got an IW single and pull it with a diesel Mondeo. Never had any problems with it and horse travels fine in it.

thank you all for responding. I will now start looking as 403's v cheval mare and foal. I like the Batesons but want a front unload .

The money that was intended for new horsey as I thought pony was on the way to full retirement is now ear marked for a new trailer - VHS regional show here we come!

Competitiondiva, thank you I have tried to take into account manufactures tow capacity (1600 with the saab) and also what the cars weight is, so I am aiming with the trailer and pony combined to be below the physical wieght of the car if that makes sense! To me aside from the legalities it makes sense to have something heavier in front of the trailer if going down a hill!!!

Ali2 I used to tow my Richardson Rossette with a mondeo, they are fab tow cars. But I just fell for my super wizzy saab! Also I dont really like the idea of a 4x4 for my day to day driving as it can involve 150 mile round trips which might not be that enviromentally friendly in a 4x4.

The saab does 64+ mile to the gallon on the motorway with cruise control set. Obviously I wouldnt expect to tow at that speed I hasten to add!

I had a IW 401 for years (and a proper narrow single trailer before that). My welsh sec D travelled fantastically in both. The 401 is still on the go (sold it to a friend) at ~15 years old.
