My mare started last week with a strong awful smelling thick nasal discharge small amount of bloodfrom her left nostril vet came out Tuesday but decided due to her being in her mid twenties to have in for X-ray and endoscope on Friday they found nothing from tests but her sinuses were full of pus she had the operation to insert the drain into them and was given antibiotics and Danilon and flush through tube with saline twice daily. They are concerned if they're is anything further underlying and have recommended a CT scan at Liverpool to rule it out quite a distance away and more stress for my elderly horse but it would need to be done in next 12 months for the insurance
Horse had a fairly bad bang to the head last October unsure on what came in from field with a wound which resulted in regular nosebleeds over the following five days and really slowed her down and set her back I'm wondering if this has played a role in the sinusitis or has it been too long ????

Sinusitis is often linked to problems with their cheek teeth where bacteria from their mouth can get up into their sinuses and cause problems. If she did have a bash to her face there's every possibility she might have fractured a tooth which might explain why she is getting sinusitis. Has she had sinusitis several times or is this the first you've noticed? Tooth problems are often a cause of recurring episodes of sinusitis. If it is caused by a tooth problem the only way to solve the primary cause is by removing the tooth and putting a plug in the root. Has she had the dentist out since October? If not maybe mention to the vets that she had a bang to her face last Autumn and that you're not sure what the situation with her teeth is. Fwiw, I'm sure the vets just want the best for her, and the hospital at Leahurst is fantastic so she will be in good hands.

Her X-ray showed teeth as all being healthy but I'm unsure how the ct will show which X-rays won't. She had funnily enough had a routine float Saturday before this all started with no problems this is her first sinusitis

A CT will show better detail and other angles that are trickier to visualise on a normal X-ray. What a mystery! I would trust the vets and see what they think - there's every possibility it might be a one off after all, and they will have her best interests at heart.
