We pottered along to our Riding Clubs showing show on Saturday to do a few classes and have a fun, no pressure first outing. I'm not a showing person - so we begged borrowed and stole kit and I threw her together and off we went.

We got along early as our lift was stewarding, so we entered the condition in hand. She's full of the joys of spring at the minute, and although she's not naughty, I thought it would just be an opportunity for her to have a walk about and settle down. 4th place in this class, and the judge said she was too skinny - wonder what she'd have thought when she came to me a month ago ;)

We also entered the ridden condition class as a last minute thing too but this wasn't popular at all - I was the only one to turn up... so automatic red ribbon, but a red ribbon none the less :)

Onto the novice horse. She hadn't quite settled yet, so I had to ride her quite tactically. In hindsight I should have taken more of a contact and ridden her forward and saw it through the sass but with it being our first time out I was just that little apprehensive. Overall second out of 7 so chuffed with that.

Next up was the hunter class - tiny bit more settled but was not for standing still in the line up as she was finding it all far too much fun. Did a fantastic extended canter, but I really had to sit on her to bring her back she was enjoying it far too much. Due to her impatience we were second again - but the judge noted that even though she is probably on the fine end of the spectrum for a hunter, she's workmanlike, forward, and looks like she'd quite happily ride across country all day, hence her placing.

Due to the classes being relatively short, I entered the Ridden Horse too - by this point she was starting to settle and take a better contact. Second again to a lovely horse with beautiful paces, who was just more established and consistent.

But aside from it all, we'd qualified for the Championship, so I held out for it to see if I could finally get the really consistent and settled individual show I was looking for - and she delivered. It was flowing, rhythmical, the transitions were fluid and she gave me such a good feeling.

To my delight we were chosen as Reserve Champion, with the judge commenting that it was the best she had gone throughout the classes and if she'd gone like that previously it would have been first places all round. Big pats for Princess <3

All in all it was a fun, confidence boosting day out. She may be fresh but she remained sane and sensible and was an absolute joy to take out - standing tied up at the trailer, racing up the ramp both going and coming back. Going to brush up on our showing skills and maybe so some more over the summer, but our next outing is Dressage on the 30th so I'll be back with more pictures and a report for that.

Another mention to Angus at Lohoar Sports Horses for putting me on to her and convincing me I could live with a mare, she really is fantastic.

She also has an unofficial job as 'Oversized Pony Club Pony' - the kids on the yard can't get enough of her, and she loves them to bits. I do think I'll lose her to them eventually ;)

All in all I still can't believe the big silly toad is mine and I still feel very lucky :)

Ah lovely update you're doing brilliantly with her! Plus unless you really want to get into showing I'd be happy with her weight ;).

What a brilliant first outing! Though it does show how I never show as I thought her weight looked spot on! She is the type of horse I would enjoy to ride to a meet, handsome and nicely put together, being from a big hunting family if I could find one that looks and acts like her I would be very happy!

sounds like you really picked a good'un, she looks super happy all the time :D I love the ones that just enjoy their jobs.

looking forward to her dressage report ;)

In hand judge spoke like she was emaciated ('She didn't place higher as I can see ribs and I'd want her out at good grass all summer!'), ridden judge said weight wise she's spot on but would like more top line - which is what we've been working on at home anyway.

she's no world beater but she's presentable, safe and fun!

I think she looks grumpy when I ride her, but I talk to her all the time so I wonder if she's just listening- when we jump her ears are pinned forward.

I would be popping an email to the secretary about that judge , showing are trying to stamp out ridiculous attitudes like that! Yes for showing they would want more top line and perhaps a little more coverage, but anyone can see she is a good fit weight!

Ak was just a local thing so not too worried about it. Anyone can see she's doing well. So well in fact she's on rations to try and minimise the silliness!

no, she's got a relaxed disposition, she doesn't look grumpy at all. focussed :)

Lovely report but I can't believe how disappointed you were sounding about being second :D I'm another one who thinks she looks spot on weight-wise, she looks fit and healthy. Fantastic first show :)

Oh god does it come across as disappointed? Wasn't at all! I was delighted with her, I didn't expect to get anything - just went for a cheery day out.

Having always loaned / shared and relied on other people for going out it was a total novelty to just go me and my own horse. Far, far from disappointed!

She looks fab and well done to both of you! The judge needs a talking to, too many overweight horses out there still in 'show condition'..at least you got feedback...I managed a first at the weekend too but just got a well done/congratulations..from the judge, no feedback yet 2nd/3rd /4th all had helpful comments! Or am I being silly?! Good luck with the rest of the season...bet you get reds!

Wow, fantastic! Well done :)

What a beautiful horse (just my type!), she looks fab. A total superstar!

a lovely horse who looks like she has good paces from the photos, her weight looks perfect for this time of year but agree she needs a bit more top line...what a good buy!!!!

Fantastic outing, sounds like she learnt loads in just that one outing. You both did fabulously. Lots more to come I'm sure. Good luck with the dressage next.

I hate the showing world's desire for over weight horses - I would totally agree with the ridden judge in that she could develop more topline but her weight is fine. I was talking to a fellow PC trainer saying a particular pony being aimed at the eventing team struggled with the xc due to being too fat but the owners wouldn't do anything as it had to have the weight for the whp classes which was their other interest - surely a hunter type should not be too fat to go across country!

She's lovely. Yes i agree she needs more muscle (and imo more condition), but what a great first outing. I'd also rethink the weight of the bridle. Something slightly wider would compliment her better.

Well done that's brilliant for your first show:) I to don't like to see obese horses in the ring she will look perfect with a bit more muscle and top line, I am being really picky here and its very minor but for showing in a Pelham you should have a lip strap that attaches to the little rings in the middle of the shanks and through the chain.

Thank you for all the advice :) showing really isn't my thing so most of the kit is borrowed, and bridle is just her day to day cheapie with a Pelham chucked on. There's a brand spanking stubben bridle winging its way to us as we speak ;)

As of tonight we were back practicing for activities more in my comfort zone- dressage. I'd love to be back in my proper zone of showjumping but I'm not rushing her in any way.

Operation top line is in full swing- trust me she looks better than when she came! Lots of long reining, polework and long and low work going on. Although I've had her just over a month, she's only been out on the grass for around 2 weeks... Dr Green is still working his magic!

Ooo, I love her, she's just my sort of horse.
Sounds like a great day out, looking forward to a dressage report :)
