Can anyone out there help. Since buying my horse last April he has had sloppy poos. He was very ill due to grade 3 ulcers which were treated with gastrogard. Since that time I have tried to put weight on him which he ha/7 s done with the help of saracen nutritionists. I have put him on just about every ulcer supplement on the market and thought I had it sussed as his droppings were just about normal for a week recently but then for not apparent reason have gone like cow pats again. Some of the things I have tried are, coligone, pink powder, ulcergard, ulcereaze, l- glutamine, diareze, even charcoal. he is turned out 24 7 unless it is dia weather, he always has food available and is fed before being ridden as advised by nutritionists and vets but alas he still has sloppy poos. apart from that he performs well and doesnt appear to have ulcers. he could do with putting a bit more weight on though. he is fed three times a day and is on releve and equijewel , beet and coligone powder and some chaff by simple systems.

He is on good quality hay. By the way he is 15 years old and is a 17.1hh thoroughbred. I am now leaving for home and internet down so wont be able to reply until tomorrow.

sorry.

Hi have a horse like this and use calm and condition now but when I got him I had him on the equijewel. I swear by protexin but what really worked for me was the equine health analysis from Forest farmacy. I filled out a questionnaire about him and sent a urine and faeces sample and they gave me a report about what he had high and low in his system. I then got a supplement from them that was tailored to him, 3 months on he is doing great and just about to have his free re test.

It looks as if you haven't tried probiotics... like yakult/actimel etc for horses!
I have 27 year old who's had colic surgery & his gut is always now a fine balancing act.
Protexin is a good brand, Biotal Equine Gold has worked very well for me in the past. If I can't get them I look for D&H SureBio (but think they've just rebranded everything!) or Dengie again can't remember name precisely but something like digestive plus. The D&H & Dengie products contain probiotic (good bacteria) prebiotic (like food for good bacteria!) & yeast
Mint is a natural prebiotic and prettyy inexpensive
The other thing that I've found helpful is Global Herbs PreBioHerb
Hilton Herbs and Global Herbs helplines are both very good.

Personally, I would opt for a general blood test, a tapeworm blood test and a sample of poo for worm counting, and then go from there.

So many different things can cause diarrhoea, but doing the above may help your vet and you narrow down options and come up with a plan.

One of our ponies (sec A) has always been loose at best and revolting at worst. And taking him anywhere resulted in projectile liquid (sorry for description but can't think of any other way to describe it ).
Someone recommended Happy Tummy - http://www.finefettlefeed.com/?page_id=23 It is charcoal, but not sure whether this is what you have used or not.
It's been brilliant. First time in years he has 'normal' droppings virtually all the time and even when we go out he's a little loose but nothing compared to what he was like previously. I just gradually upped the dosage until he was ok (4 scoops) and then dropped it back a bit (2 or 3 scoops) once he had stabilised.
Previously we'd used quite a few of the other things suggested above, but this has been the best.
Hope that helps. :)

I found the Happy Tummy very expensive and so managed to get some from Equimins. It is activated charcoal and is much cheaper,I am using it at the mo for the same problem. It is not on their web site but if you e-mail or telephone, they are very helpful and it is quick delivery.

Thanks muff - I'll look into it. At the moment I'm working through the largest size container they do which was on special offer, but as I start to get near the bottom I'll call Equimins. :)

I use Happy Tummy and Protexin for horse who has loose droppings after bout of colitis. When she was in the vet hospital they fed her alfa-a and sugar beet to help with the diahorrea. I find that if I give her more sugar beet and a double dose of protexin on 'looser' days it helps alot.

This ^^
I'd have done this a long time ago - a horse with diarrhoea for this long is bound to struggle to keep weight on etc.
Ask your vets about protein losing enteropathy - often caused by high NSAID use (bute etc) & also ask about Colitis.
