Anyone who uses slug pellets in their gardens and has dogs, especially young pups, just a warning for you.

Sadly, one of our labrador pups that we sold has died recently, she was 15 weeks old. The owner had been using (supposedly) dog safe slug pellets in the garden, which pup had been eating over the weeks they had her. She eventually became very sick and had to be rushed to the emergency vets, but after trying to hours to get her through it she finally gave in :( The PM confirmed that she died due to ingesting the slug pellets.

Owners are understandably devestated, as am I as that puppy should have had a long life and it just isnt fair. We always advise people against using rat poisons/plant fertilisers anywhere near where their pups will go, you'd think it was common sense but a lot of people do put things in their gardens when they have dogs. Its frustrating when people wont listen when you've told them this though. These owners said they will never use the pellets again - bit late for the puppy!!!!

If anyone DOES use any kind of poisons in their gardens please PLEASE stop. The poor puppy died a horrible death that was entirely avoidable. I'd rather have a garden full of ruined plants than a dead pup - ANY DAY!!!

Sadly this isn't uncommon: I was at the vets the other day and an owner was going through exactly the same thing.

The manufacturer's of these pellets will SAY that they're OK and safe to use with pets arouond, but his experience, and yours, shows clearly that they're not. This particular owner had had to pay out nearly a thousand quid to sort the dog out and was saying that he was passing on all receipts to the manufacturers as he was considering them liable - dunno how he got on.

But at least this particular owner had a live dog at the end of it.

How very very sad, and completely avoidable :(

Having had cats for many years and now a dog I just don't use any type of insecticides or poisons. I feed the wild birds all year round so they keep a lot of garden pests down, and have a small wildlife pond so have frogs and toads living in my garden, haven't seen a slug for years!

A much nicer and safer way of keeping the garden looking good.

That is so sad. If the product was sold as dog safe I would think they definitely have a claim against the manufacturer, not that it will bring the pup back.:(

I have never used slug pellets, and certainly at the moment the pups have ensured there are no plants for the slugs to eat!

How sad, i saw similar story in the news ages ago which killed an adult lab. I think the pellets tend to say they contain stuff to make them less appealing to pets rather than its safe.

It takes just one level teaspoon of metaldehyde pellets to kill a dog,any size. I lost one of my girls when she found a container of them after breaking out of a safe fenced paddock, she played with the "rattley " tub and ingested a few.Nothing could get her back, even though almost immediately I had made her vomit with Washing Soda crystals before speeding to the vet.Lethal stuff. Even so..always have washing soda crystals in your dog vet cupboard ,it can be a lifesaver.

Won't touch the things and as we have slug city in my strawberries at the moment I use nematodes, natures way of fighting back and safe for animals and wildlife too, sorry for the loss of the pup but as you say, you can only tell people so many times, if they choose to do the opposite there's not alot you can do, unfortunately.
