Please help! All the mares are starting to come in season again and the flies are coming also and my horse likes nothing more to mount them all. They all seem to enjoy it too. I don't mind cos it keeps him quite muscular with all this daily romping activity but there is one big problem. His sheath is just constantly dirty. I cleaned it the other day with this special sheath cleanser with all natural ingredients, it was meant to be non-irritant. All week he has been swolen and has now developed lumps all around the area. I keep washing it with clean warm water (Which he likes!

) to try and clear it up. I have never had this problem with any other horses, I rarely clean their sheaths only with water if they are a bit manky. But he really needed it, its' not like its his willy that is dirty when it is out

is it when it is away. It all the folds and creases and stuff. Its like grey creamy ick in the crevasses and when he lies down it goes on his legs. It also smells awful and the flies seen to be really attracted to it which doesn't help. When it drys on his legs, it is a nightmare to get off. Sorry to gross everybody out, it is a bit hard to explain, hehe.

What do you think is the best thing to do, try some different willy wash, or leave it or sit for ages with a bucket of water trying to soak it all away, it just seems to come back quite quick. I asked the vet if it was infected when she vaccinated the other week and she said it was normal and he just needs it washing regularly?

But I don't want to make him even more sore. BTW he is good with me washing it, he really enjoys it lol, he spends most of his life with it out, he is just a sexual kinda horse lol

My big highland is a show off too. He "hangs out" whenever hes groomed or even stroked. He doesnt mount mares cos I think hes a bit too heavy to get that high. I clean his sheath with warm water and fairy liquid diluted, rinse well and put a drop of baby oil on his willie so it can go back in when hes ready. I meant to add that he gets lots of black sticky, stinky stuff after winter usually.

Would he allow you to put a hose pipe in his sheath<? the vet advised that to us on one pony and it did seem to help (must say it was warm water lol)

Hmm I would love to see his face if I stuck a hose pipe up there!

I'm not sure what he would do, he usually likes pretty much anything to do with his tinker but I would imagine it would be quite a shock for him! I have been getting a sponge with warm water right up there but it seems to all come back quite quickly? I'll see what I can do!!!

yeh dunthing, he doesn't have any problem with acomplishing the act! He is 17h polish warmblood and his two GF's are old fat 15h cobby mare's that just stand like a rock for him lol. He even tried to mount a gelding the other week

He has just been gelded so he has a valid excuse but it still don't help the matter of his sticky d*ck

You need to check he hasn't got a "bean" in his urethral fossa. If you Google "urethral fossa bean" you will be able to see some info on this. Basically they get a hard lump of built up smegma in the hole right on the end of their willy next to where the wee comes out. You can tell if there is one there as if you squeeze the end of his willy you can feel it. You then kind of gently squeeze it out and the symtoms you have described should stop. I had the same problems a few months ago.

And you are allowing him to still run with mares?? Well I hope for your sake that you are the owner of these mares.....because if I was and he impregnated them I'd be seriously peed off!

Ohh, there are absolutely ancient, both are completely barren, and the owner asked if she could give them to us on permanent full loan until they passed away and that was 7 years ago and there still alive!!! She hasn't been upto see them in 2 years but she didn't want to sell them or have them put down as they are still healthy but no use as brood mares any more. We still use them as traffic guards sometimes with young horses! They have been great with the young colts, they are like two old grandma's! Every year they are put with the yearling and two year old horses. I know it sounds a strange set-up but they kind of educate them in manners. Both mares are 100% unfertile so there is no chance of any babies. You would be surprised how little "sexual activity" there is, and it does seem to stop all the colts from play fighting also. They are both definately head of the herd and everybody else is put in their place. It stops all the cockyness of the young colts too without many injuries.
Back to the point, I don't think it's to do with him mounting the mares as the stallions don't get it anywhere near as bad as him, must just be his natural thing??

My boy has the same problem.... he had a bean removed by the vet, but is always very dirty down there... I guess some horses must just be dirtier than others!

I try not to wash it too often cos that can irritate it.... about once a month with sheath wash and then put baby oil on.... I also put baby oil on the inside of his back legs (after washing them) - that made it sooo much easier to brush the scank off!!

And I make sure to spray fly spray around there too!

Louie stands with one hind leg cocked like a dog taking a pee, with his willy hanging out for me to wash it!!!!!! He seems to like it and pulls all sorts of silly faces - It must be itchy! Luckily he's stabled in a barn, so passers by dont see!!!!!

I will get the vet to check him again when he has his annual vaccinations etc

Yeh, my vet doesn't seem to be too bothered but it smells horrible! It seems to be worst at this time of year. Is he ok with the baby oil? I don't want to put anything on that will irritate him but I would think baby oil should keep it soft and cleaner? Never thought of that before, might try it, just have to be careful he doesn't have it out too long if the sun comes out cos I would hate for him to get sunburn down there!!!

Hiya I thought I would post on here because my big lad has had a smelly todge a few times.
I have only cleaned his willy twice since September when I got him but I do check it regularly. The first time he was especially smelly I found a huge bean which I managed to get out quite easily. Just make sure you are a bit lubricated when you enter that part as it does make it a little easier.
The next time I cleaned him I used some vaseline afterwards as his skin seemed a little dry and cracked in his sheath.
It improved and then a few weeks later I had read on here about baby oil so I squirted some up and tried to massage in as well ( bit embarrassing but worth it lol). Since then his willy has been better and when I have seen it dropped it looks cleaner. The amount of grey ( looks like old and manky blu tack/chewing gum) that he used to get on his hind legs has reduced as well. I squirted and massaged some more oil in a few weeks ago and have decided to just basically use this method as well as checking for a bean or a large amount of gunk.
Hope that is of some help?
Cazx
