Smelly Shetland pony!

Hi,
We’ve had this issue for a while, my Shetland keeps pooing in his tail! Right down the dock is all matted with poo! I try brush it out daily but it keeps happening. Why is this?
I’ve tried lathering his tail in conditioner and mane and tail spray in the hope it would slide out but it doesn’t!
anyone have a solution for this? He’s not a fan of getting his tail touched anyway so trying to get under the dock is possible but a challenge!

How is he with lifting his tail? Worth investigating thinning his tail to take weight out of it, or thoroughly checking the lower spine to the bottom of the dock bone that there isnt any damage at all (by vet)

Could he have fecal water syndrome? That can cause poo to run out and cover the tail. I would probably see if a vet could have a look though.

Mine is like this! The only way I can stop it completely is to allow no access at all to grass, found out when he had a mild laminitis episode and had to stay in.
I’ve tried every type of gut supplement out. Nothing has ever helped let alone worked.
He’s a pure white grey which doesn’t help matters ?‍

have you tried protexin or similar to firm him up, sometimes it can be new grass which affects their insides

Is he on any medication for anything? It can be a side effect of some medicines.
As has been mentioned above, does he lift his tail to toilet?
