Our 12 year old Spaniel has developed sores around both sides of her lips. She did have a visit to the vets some months ago and was prescribed antibiotics which did more or less clear them up. But as soon as she’d finished the course they re-occurred.
I’ve tried wiping with a salt solution several times a day, she’s on a seaweed supplement which is supposed to be good for mouth issues but it’s really not getting any better. The vet talked about surgery to cut out the offending area which I’m really not onboard with due to her age.
If you Google ‘spaniel lip fold dermatitis’ it looks like that.
Any suggestions…thank you

My old collie had this and it absolutely stunk. I had some cream to put on it which was brilliant. Not positive but I think it was dentisept which is actually a toothpaste. Just had to squeeze it on to the affected part.

Have you tried chlorhexidine wipes?

Probably not relevant but my collie started to develop hot spots on her body when I started her on a seaweed supplement for her teeth. They did go when I stopped feeding it but may have just been a coincidence. I know that's not the same as sores around the mouth but may be worth stopping it for a while just as an experiment x

CLX wipes or Douxo pyo pads are useful chlorhexidine wipes, bit easier than making up batches of wash or using Dentisept/Dentihex (the latter is mega sticky and seems to get everywhere but on the dog).

My lab had lip fold dermatitis. It was mainly a food allergy, beet pulp triggered it (in her case). I’m sure there can be other issues but I’d try an exclusion diet.
And with T it was a yeast infection, she also got bad ears and smelly feet.
Thank you for your reply. Interesting. She is fed a dry food and has had the same for many years. I will try this Dentisept first and see how we get on. I’ll have a look at the dry food ingredients in the meantime 👍🏻

An update on the smelly Spaniel...tried the Chlorhexidine, did make a slight difference but not great so popped her to the vets. Lots of bad things going on in her mouth relating to her teeth so on Monday she went under GA and had a good scale and polish and quite a few teeth removed  Poor girl!
She's rather sore at the moment but was very happy to be home on the Monday night. She had a warty lump on her head which I got them to remove as well (two birds with one stone and all that) !!😄

Hi I hope your girl recovers soon from the dental 🤞 bless her, I just wanted to mention smelly breath “could” be signs of a kidney issue so if it doesn’t improve maybe run some bloods but hopefully all is well x
