Do you smoke when you're sitting on your horse? There was a guy at a competition recently and he came out after his sj round and immediately lit up while still mounted. He was puffing away, chatting to a few people when the horse went to shy and as he tried to gather up his reins he dropped the cigarette which fell on to the horses withers and between the saddle. Horse, as expected, totally freaked, mad bucking and dumped rider then galloped off. When it was caught later it had a burn on it's withers and was quite shaken up. Rider was ok, btw. Riding club rules over here say that you're not allowed smoke while mounted but no other organisations do.

If your a smoker do you smoke while mounted? What are anybodys thoughts on it?
I'm not a smoker and personally don't like seeing people smoking on or near horses. I can move away if someones blowing smoke in my face but the horse can't. Also think it can lead to unnecessary accidents, as I witnessed before.

Yes do smoke but like you hate seeing people smoking on horses, how hard is it to jump off ?? Would only take 2 secs!

People ride and smoke all the time over here. I don't; not particularly for any reason other than I never have, so it never occurs to me to do so.

If I were to, it wouldn't exactly worry me about the smoke blowing in my horse's face though.

I smoke on horseback - not every time I ride, but when out hunting if we are stood around for 30mins I will have a cigarette - you cannot really jump off to smoke it

I also have one if we are out on a 2/3hr ride. Have smoked on horseback since I was 14, not burnt a horse yet LOL!

i smoke while hacking, have never burnt a horse, dont blow smoke in anybody else' face, my ned doesnt seem to care much either!!!

I don't normally smoke while riding but do have the occasional one out hunting, last boxing day some mates were following and were having a picnic so I stopped off for a fag and a can of lager - classy!

My mum hates me smoking while riding - says I look like a chav!

I don't really think you are blowing smoke in their face though!

I used to be a smoker never smoked when on a horse though. What really gets me about those that smoke is ones that blow smoke around my horses, i had always smoked away from them

Well that taught him a hard lesson did it not!

In my younger years we always used to smoke when out riding

Also when I used to showjump the last thing I would do before heading to the collecting ring was have a smoke for my nerves! Never burned my horse though, only sort of sort of social smoke now

I smoke but I usually get off to do so if on a hack. Gives my bum a rest. Also means I lead my boy in all sorts of situations not just in emergencies. I must admit at competitions the first thing I do after coming out of arena is have a ciggie.

I smoke, but not on the horse. One of my friends, when I was at school did the same thing and dropped the cigarette between her pony and the saddle. I'm happy to learn from someone elses mistake on this one!

haha, i wish i'd seen that, served him right. shame for the poor burnt horse though, that's so unfair.
i can't stand smoking, full-stop. and smokers that come to my place and wander into the barn where the stables are, still smoking, and say casually "oh, don't worry, i won't set it on fire", make me absolutely LIVID.

I absolutely hate seeing people puffing away while still on board. It just looks horrid and gives no respect at all to the horse due to cases like this. People shouldn't smoke anywhere near horses - they should get off, hand their horse to someone and go and do it elsewhere. I hate people who light up round my horses - Why should I have to move away due to their habit?

I'm a heavy smoker. I have to smoke a fag as I get on a horse - every time!

I was addicted to nicotine in the early sixties. It was then advertised everywhere, and non-smokers weren't cool. We weren't told how hard it is to give up.

I can't muck out with a ciggie. I can't do anything without a ciggie. I can't give up.

Now, due to the new laws. I can't go out anywhere. I can't judge anymore. I can't travel (except in my own car).

Smokers are being punished enough. We should be able to sue the tobacco companies for the dreadful state addiction has put our lives in.

Cigarettes and horse bedding, now THAT worries me...

Have you sought help to give up? Instead of saying "I can't" do this and that, you need to turn it around and say "I can, and I will!"

Lots of people give up smoking on a daily basis. It is not a physical impossibility if you actually WANT to do it!

Smokers have suffered enough lol ... Now that makes me laugh .

Exactly what puppy has said ... and by the way dont read into my signature too much ...oh dear I sound alittle bit like im contradicting myself lol

.... at the end of the day YOU could give up if you WANTED too .

By the way , I detest smoking ! .

my aunt gave up smokeing after 50 years of the horrible habit, she has never looked better. yes it was hard but if you want to give up you will.

as for the comment about smokers having suffered enough, got to laugh at it, you may choose to smoke cancer sticks but i dont and i rather like going out and not comeing back reaking of smoke with cigarette burns on my clothes and haveing had to breath in smoke all evening. I dont choose to give myself lungcancer but before the ban i didnt have much of a choice about breathing in smoke when i went out. Not being able to smoke in public places also will hopefully deter those who would have picked it up as a social thing to do in bars and clubs.

I hate people who smoke on horses or in a stable. its so dangerous, so much of a fire risk, and as for the guy who dropped his cigarette on the horse well served him right, poor horse though, it didnt choose to smoke and didnt deserve to be burned.

Well, back to the OP.....

Yes i have smoked on a horse, long rides (quite good for keeping flies away in summer)or when there has been a lull out hunting, but i wouldn't do it regularly. I have never managed to burn a horse though.

I wouldn't do it on somebody else's horse if it bothered them - but then there are a great many things I wouldn't do with other people's property or animals that I might do with my own.

As for it being harmful to the horse - out in the open air? I don't think so.

I used to ride with someone that smoked out hacking. She had one hand on the reins and was not paying full attention therefore to riding. I personally think that is as dangerous as riding whilst on a mobile phone.

Really? I often ride one handed out hacking and always have done and i imagine most polo players cope quite well with only one hand on a fistful of reins. If there was a reason not to smoke when riding that most certainly wouldn't be it.
