Following on from my 'Mud' post, someone mentioned snuggy hoods so thought I'd take a look and saw they do heads only covers which could be the solution I'm after. But... I have also read numerous horror stories on here of hoods slipping, horses injuring themselves or panicing due to being blinded.
Have people had these bad experiences with Snuggy Hoods turnout products or are these more robust and safe?
I'm still not entirely sure I like the idea of covering her up completely (as 'humanising' I don't think I'd like to wear a balaclava all day).
But it would save the clods of mud which get caught up behind her ears which she hates me trying to remove.
Any reviews good or bad please?

As with any item of 'clothing' there's a risk, but having used Snuggy Hoods for about 5 years (on 2 greys, one of whom is half horse, half hippo) I'd definitely say they're the safest of them all. They've ripped them and lost them (thanks to playing with a horse who was very good at removing them!) but they've not had any accidents in them. I've seen other cheaper versions move all the time, but the Snuggy Hoods are good at staying put. I wouldn't consider another make. I've got 2 sensible, older horses who are in a well fenced field with a very settled herd which probably minimises the risk (touch wood!)

I had a snuggy hood turnout head which I considered to be a very good fit. Horse got it over his eyes, ran blind, slipped over and injured himself - very lucky as it could have been a lot worse. Binned it after that, not worth the risk IMO.

One of ours is a real hippo, but I would rather spend 10minutes a day getting mud off of him than risk an accident.

Depends on your horse. Current horse I have no hood slips, my old pony however had a snuggy hood turnout and it slipped badly over her eyes. They took it back to adjust it without taking measurements?! And it came back worse! Almost damaged her eye. They asked for it back and would refund but I never saw my refund.

I bought one. It wouldn't stay in place. Sent it back, got it altered and still slipped. Stopped using the head though occasionally use the body when other rug is in wash.
I think they tend to work best when used on slender type animals without much mane.

Ah interesting. Mine is a rather chunky Welsh with a lot of mane! So maybe no good?

Ask any vet about them - horror stories - eek

From running blind , to losing eyes through digging in over the eyes

My vet told me to avoid at ALL costs.

I bought one a few weeks ago and the exact same thing happened, luckily my boy didn't injure himself but got himself in a right state, wet through frantic screaming his head off, it fit snug and I fastened all the Velcro as tight as possible, I tried it twice but the same thing happened, my stallion won't even keep a fly mask on so I just thought it's not worth it and sold it to a friend and it's fine on her pony. I think some horses just won't keep stuff like this on.

I also had one on my sport horse mare which always stayed in place on her so I do think it depends on the horses tolerance to keep things like that on.
