Ok...on our yard, the fields are resting ....we have daily turnout for as long as we want in a designated T/O paddock....there is no grass in it at all now and it is a bit of a mud fest, but at least we have T/O if wanted/needed.

YO is happy for us to put hay out .....the other year she organised a big rounds of hay/haylege and added a couple of quid to our bills per horse....which I thought was great for ad-lid forage every day. She stopped doing this because certain people wouldn't pay, on the grounds that their horses didnt go out ( they did, even if it was for only an hour whilst mucked out, but in my view they still had access to the hay and the owners should have coughed up)

So this year I offered to pay/organise a big round, and asked others to contribute per horse to cover the cost.......some wanted to, others didnt on the grounds that their horses didnt go out (as above) or (get this) because my horses went out earlier than every one elses and they would eat more hay...the owner didnt want to stump up £2 for a weeks hay in the paddock because of this (WTF?

)

So now wer'e left with putting out hay for our horses on an individual basis....I put loads out and assumed (wrongly) that the others who did put their horses out did the same.....but having been down the yard in daylight at weekends, it seems I am in fact feeding everyone elses horses ( specifically the one who would not part with £2 towards a big bale cos mine would eat more than hers..)......the other week I left a little note asking people to put hay out for their horse, as I didnt think it was fair only me doing it.....cue plenty of backstabbing but they did it for a day or two.....then again this weekend - no hay out.....hairy little pony of above owner tucking into my quality hay before Id even got my horses out of the stables......so I had a rant off , and took some hay from her pile, and left a note to say what I had done and why......

I am so pissed off with people for putting their horses out with out anything to eat, and letting me pick up their slack....makes me so mad......

What would you do now?
YO wont force anyone to put hay out, and my attempts are just getting me slagged off.....OH says just to get my head around the fact I'm gonna spend all winter feeding their horses but it just riles me...

Sorry, pointless boring post, Irish coffee and croissants if you are still with me...

I'd be finding another yard if the YO is prepared to charge the extra only to those who want to pay it. It should be all or none.

I have no bright ideas for you but reading this makes me sooooo happy i'm on my own yard with no one else. Sometimes its lonely but at least its peaceful! Poor you.

I dunno could you stop feeding them hay in the field at all for a few days and up it at night so you know they are still getting the same then see what happens. Or move yards/ ask for a field on your own were you can feed hay!

Hmm, I'm in a similar position as my girl gets 'bossed' away from any hay I put out for her. I just don't bother any more and make sure she gets ad lib hay overnight instead. She goes out about 7am - 5pm in a field which is mostly bog but seems to be doing fine on it. Not ideal, but possibly the only way to stay sane!

can you put haynets out ?

that way you put them up when yours go out and bring them in when you bring in.

Millie pops I had the same prob when Bobby the old boy got well and started bullying mine so he didn't get an hay, so I put out less in the field for him and more at night! works fine they just spend the afternoon playing now instead of eating and mashing my field into a muddy mess!

This kind of system only works if everyone pays - regardless of how long their horses go out for. And the YO should take responsibilty of organising it and charging as necessary.

A horse that doesn't go out is not liable for charge. However, that doesn't mean that it can go out on the odd ocassion as the owner feels like it, thereby taking advantage of the system.

You are right. Why should you feed other peoples horses? And if they are turning their horses into a bare field they SHOULD be giving hay!

I have my foal out with two ponies that aren't mine- I put out a net of my hay and a net of the other owners - just to give them something to nibble. Neither of us has any problem with it. We're probably using slightly more of mine than hers in that its 2 ponies of hers to my 1 but she often helps me turning out and things so its fine.

Can't understand why some people think they should get things for nothing when its costing someone else!

I would speak to YO and say either you get a section of field for you for yours, or everyone shares the cost of hay as you aren't prepared to subsidise people.

Maybe they should get up earlier if they think theirs are getting 3 blades of hay less than yours...

Mine are out 24/7 with 18 others. We have hay put out by the farmer every morning for a couple of quid a day and they get lots so that is a really good deal. I am lucky since we always have moaners who don't want to pay (especially when it comes to when to stop the hay in the spring, generally the same folks who think that not having shoes means you don't have to pay for the farrier etc). Luckily we have a definite majority rules policy. Those who don't like it don't have to stay! I reckon stop putting it out for a bit and up the hay at night and see what happens if fencing off is not an option.

I would definitely ask for a section of the field to be fenced off for yours, get some electric fencing and you can feed your whatever you like

.....or if there are other owners who would be prepared to chip in with big bale how about halfing the paddock - those who care

and those who don't!!

I really really really can't understand how £2 makes all that much difference at the end of the day!!! unless you buy those HORRID cheap chckens form TESCO (boycotted by moi) which costs about the same! personally I'd prefer to stump up the cash! is works out as £52 pounds a year if you feed hay for 6 months!!!! less than a set of SHOES!!!!

RANT OVER!!!!

We had thought about asking to section the paddock in half.....for those of us who give a toss and are prepared to feed hay, the other half for those that dont want to bother......might be best way to go really.

I know mine get absolutely huge haynets overnight, theres always a fair amount left over so they get plenty and are well fed but I still can't bring myself to put them out without anything to nibble on.....

.....as long as I'm not a moaning old bitch ( well I am, really) but not without reason

We had this years ago. A couple of people would not buy in any hay then make sure they turned out just as we left so that their horses got to eat the hay...

In the end we split our horses so that their two were in a separate area and couldn't access they hay. It felt horrible but we couldn't afford to be feeding additional horses as well as our own.

You can't subsidise other people! I would be fuming if this was me - I'm sorry, but their horse, their responsibility to feed it.

The only solution I can see is to section off the paddock and feed your hay to your horses - or get the YO to go back to charging you all for the hay. only fair!

Yeah....I was fuming at the weekend....gonna speak to YO I think, she is usually very good ...she stopped putting the big bales in cos people were not happy to pay because they weren't putting their horses out...fair enough if you dont at all, but even if they out for a hour having a munch on then that counts surely......

......i just think if you cant afford £2 extra then its time to sell up......and if you dont think your horse is worth it, then you shouldnt have them....

Tell them that won't pay to tie their horses outside their stable when they muck out and not to turn in the field as (they said they don't turn out)!! Cruel peeps. Get the large round bales and jump on them if they turn their neds out with yours. But really this should be sorted by YO it's her yard her rules. But like too many they don't want the hassle. Glad I'm on my own land and stables

Also I wish someone would supply my horse with hay/haylage in the field for a week for £2.00.

If it were £2 a day I could understand their not agreeing but £2 a week bl**dy h*ll lets hope horse doesn't need a vet

i was sharing a field with another livery, who is constantly moaning her tb is underweight i was putting hay in the field for my mare but as she refused as her horse didn't need it, i ended up feeding him too. in the end i go so sick of the your horse did this and your horse did that situation i thought stuff it and put my mare in with my gelding and made them get on with it. so now if my horse runs around my field its my problem and if one of them loses a shoe my problem and most of all i'm only paying to feed my horses

sorry rant over too, i would definalty tell the yo to be sorting it some way or another.

We are lucky on are yard as we only use large bales that are used in the field and for haynets in the stables. So YO puts one in the field and one on the barn for us to all help ourselves, then she just splits the cost of the bales between all the owners and adds them to the livery bill. Works very well for us.

I just can't cope with people who quibble over small amounts of money like this and I'd be really furious at subsidising their horses. Its a shame your YO won't just put the hay out and tell them they're paying for it.
I'm lucky that I only share a field with one other person and we buy hay between us to keep things simple. Neither of us are petty enough to get into "your horse ate more than my horse".

I know.....I couldnt believe thats the reason for not stumping up an extra £2 a week.....she spends more than that on baccy for her roll-ups, and Ive dropped more down the back of the car seat!.......

......but this is the woman who had to save up for a pair of safety stirrups for her daughter.....she mentioned them so many times I did wonder if she expected me to pay for those also.....as people have said, god forbid a vets bill......

You are not a complaining old moo don't worry. I would probably completely lose the plot over something like this. How dare people use your hay for their own horses when they are not prepared to pay for it! That is stealing in my book. Also who in their right mind wants their horse out when it is wet/slippy and no grass to occupy them, accidents easily happen when horses are bored and a bit fresh from being in more than normal, its so much nicer and safer when they have a nice fresh pile of hay/haylage in the field.

so happy there is only me and sojephs horses that use our field, we take it in turns with hay so it works itself out in the end.
Mind you I'd be pee'd off if another person wasn't contributing to theirs eating my hay.
