So does anyone here hunt for reasons other than watching hounds?

Starbucks of course I wouldn't harm a hair on a hounds head - no-one shouts "HOUND ON THE LEFT!!!" louder than me (unless it's on the right of course) :grin:

Starbucks, I know that but you see so many accidents waiting to happen through people coming for hooly's. I'm not saying everyone is a numpty, I just think not enough people that do come hunting know enough about hunting and why they are their. I don't mean The die hard hoolyers (is that a word?) like yourself, but to many people come on here for inspiration and we don't want them thinking they haven't got a job to do too, does that make sense? We are losing Etiquette and that's what I am affraid of more than anything.
 
QR I love watching hounds work (when we get a chance) and it is a huge part of hunting (obviously even post ban) but its not the only or biggest reason I enjoy my hunting.

I choose to go hunting because of the tradition , the sense of 'family' between the members and the excellent riding and atmosphere (even on a poor day!) ofcourse I could go on a fun ride but it just doesn't hold the same enjoyment or thrill as to go out with the hunt.
 
So to save on the expense that everybody is saying about why don't these people just go on sponsered rides, box up with mates to different areas?? Not an argument just a valid point.
Basically if you are not bothered about hounds working and being part of the hunt and don't want to buy the gear or more to the point can't afford it, then just go out with friends to somewhere you can all meet up??

Mr Woof - If you think that is the voice of reason WHERE do you suggest we can go and how do you suggest that the hunt makes up the hole in their funds when we all go there?

That would depend on whether the hunt feel that the loss of your subs is bearable given that your are not actually interested in hunting!
 
I'm really not like that though! Ok well maybe a little bit. But I can honestly say me and my horse have done 0 damage to the country, him or me in the 5 years I've had him. Same goes for my other horses/ponies (although I've hurt myself a couple of time on them!) :p

And I mean - never had a topper off (well can't say never but maybe 1 or 2 toppers in 5 seasons aint bad).

But I think that's because I'm a HORSE person. I event, I SJ, I can ride to a reasonable level. I wouldn't put my horse at anything I think is dangerous for him or me and certainly nothing I thought was too big for him (but that would have to be big!). :p

My parents are well respected in the hunt because they ride well and have good horses - not because they like to watch hounds.

Whatever peoples reasons for hunting - they should still know the rules and how to behave.

Yes, we have had a few - they did not last long.
Obviously pushed off to another pack or went xc or fun rides!!
What a wonderful picture - reminds me of the Snaffles' "The Finest View in Europe" - except that one is a grey.

I think the clue is in the title ie. "hunting" after all that is why the hunts exist....to hunt. Not to merely provide people with a jolly over a few jumps and a bit of grass. I thought that those who just want to gallop and jump went with bloodhounds!!

Surely the enjoyment of hunting is watching hounds work? To cross the country as it comes to keep up with them as far as possible, not go for a 2 mile detour with the sole purpose of jumping as much as possible. Good houndwork makes for a good day in my eyes.
 
I hunt to enjoy the horse I have, not to watch hounds. I hunt with the Draghounds though and the aim of the day is a good fast jumping day.

I think it's a bit prescriptive to say 'why hunt if you don't enjoy watching the hounds'. That's a bit like saying why watch racing if you don't enjoy a punt, or why play darts if you're teetotal. If we enjoy and support hunting, it's not enormously important why. If you enjoy watching hounds, then great. If you enjoy hedgehopping, that's great too. It's not exactly either or, it's something for everyone.

I have also yet to find a XC course that would allow a field of 50 horses to pelt round, or one with big hedges and good timber fences only. Or one that is open all winter...
 
I enjoy watching hounds, OH had educated me now and I'd say the conversations at the end of the day are lots more about hounds than horses... OH is usually on a wobbler about foot followers patting hounds and othersuch...
I don't have a problem with anyone who comes out for a jolly around really, fair enough some people don't have the joy of hacking on private lands and it must be lovely to get out.
My problem is solely with people who come out for a hoon about, have absolutely no respect for other people's land, the ground, the state of fields, churn up the ground lines for jumping etc etc

OMG!!!! At least listen to what I say!!! At no point has anyone said they go hunting to jump as many fences as possible and that really is not my intention!!

As I've said - all I want is to FOLLOW hounds and enjoy my horse while doing so.

I just enjoy riding my horse more than looking at hounds!!!

TBH Rosiie - so you shouldn't seen as you've been out for a Jolly until you've met OH!
 
And that is what I just said, but there is no alternative with the rockwood- Sarah last time they had a pack of hounds worth watching, with people capable of working hounds, I was a small child on a wooley pony too small to appriciate. Ropckwood IS about the jolly, and I miss that aspect, we used to have a right boozy day!

For what it is worth, I think that Starbucks just enjoys winding up other people.
Her opinions vary just so much that they are rather like listening to a schizophrenic.
If one has an opinion, then one should stick to it and not creep to ingratiate oneself to other people.
 
No!! I like hunting to enjoy my horse while following hounds. That does not mean my sole enjoyment is watching hounds - my sole enjoyment is riding my horse while following them!

Why is that so hard to understand????
 
If someone doesn't even give a hoot about hounds (which I do), why does that make them into what you said above??

TBH I think that regulars who are crap riders/have crap horse are the worst - the ones who damage the most walls/fences that us dasf buggers have to go and build back up on a sunday!

You are so set in your ways you are not listening. That is why i seem like I'm sucking up, or changing my mind. LISTEN!!
 
if a field master is worth his oats he'll be keeping an eye on hunters careering everywhere anyway- thats his job, to look after the "field". the pleasure of hunting is in my mind to enjoy your horse, enjoy watching hounds work which CAN be amazing, have a sociable day out but not to the detriment of upsetting hunt staff, or yacketing to all in sundry and therefore ignoring what and where things are happening! just my own thoughts so no bollockings from others please!!

Hounds? I do listen to hounds, I'm a keen follower. I just prefer the ride on my horse.

You? I think you are yet to tell me why I'm wrong for my own enjoyments when I don't wreck farmers land for the sake, I have manners etc.

I was not aware that this was a competition as to whether one wins or loses.
I was PM'd yesterday by a very respected MFH - who actually told me that you are "an arrogant b******, who knows nothing but thinks she knows a lot".
So put that in pipe and smoke.
How does it feel, knowing that people (who DO know what they are talking about) think that about you? Could you not consider that perhaps you should rein in your opinions somewhat?

Or give me some kind of answer. Just to humor me.

Anyway, why am I being arrogant? It's you who has a problem with me going hunting because I don't enjoy hunting just for hounds...

now girls, this is getting a bit shirty now- we're all here supporting hunting so dont wreck it by falling out- things written are sometimes misconstrued so treat tomorrow as a new day, if you're out hunting enjoy!!

But no I don't think I should rein in my opinions just because someone may or may not have PMed you.

all I have said is that is that I think people should be well turned out, and asked why it maters what enjoyment you get out of hunting. If that makes me an arrogant little bitch then so be it.

At least will you PM me who you think I am - just so I know whoever this well respected MFH actually knows who I am.
