I'm in month 3 of my first horse share so it's all a learning curve but I have just had to be 'rescued' for the 2nd time.
1st incident - turnout fields changed round and I went to take pony out. Didn't realise that leading a mare through the geldings field was such a big no-no. Got mugged by 6 big buggers until someone came to help fend them off until I could get to my field. Turns out there was a different (safe) route I should have used.
2nd incident - pony hasn't been ridden since Monday because I haven't been able to get into the schools. Took pony for an in-hand leg stretch up the quiet road by the stables. Walks out ok - marches back but then objects to oncoming car headlights and nearly pushes / drags me down a bank twice. I was near the stables so someone must have heard my cursing and helped me lead pony back. (I think I would have made it on my own eventually)
Don't get me wrong - I really appreciate the help and they're not at all judgemental but I hate being the numpty of the yard!
The same mistakes are not made twice!

Just remember, every day is a school day and mistakes are there to be learnt from.

I think even the most expert of horse people do something and then think "why the frick did I do that?!"
 
Indeed. As long as you learn from your mistakes and take heed of (good) advice.

After 25 years horse experience, I managed to feed my horse a carrot and my finger the other week ..Ouch....Doh!. :o where is the embarassed smiley.
 
I managed to smack myself in the eye with a shavings fork while skipping out yesterday, definate t*** moment, glad no-one was there to see it :D
 
Ive owned horses for about 25 years and i was just saying yesterday to a friend that every horse teaches you something.
 
Nah, happens to us all! And no one will mind helping or giving advice - it makes us feel important ;). If you haven't already then you could get hold of a copy of the ponyclub manual of horsemanship and read through it. It won't replace practical experience but will give you a good grounding.

I've ridden all my life, had my own since I was 8, and it's still hard being the new girl. I've just started sharing an Arab mare whose aim in life is to embarrass me in front of the YO! :o
 
i gave myself a black eye once when doing the girth up and not paying enough attention, the horse moved and pulled the leather out my hand, hand shot up straight into my eye! eye was POURING, puffed up straight away. SERIOUSLY embarrasing!!!
 
My worst moment was when I had some lessons at a riding school (I still had ponies at home but didn't have anything I could ride at that time). A member of staff parked my horse next to the mounting block and told me to get on and I just assumed that she would have checked the girth... of course the saddle slipped round and then I got a real telling off. That was about 7 years ago and I still remember the feeling of humiliation as everyone looked at me like I was a complete tit!

I still do things now which I class as Homer Simpson "DOH!" moments! As long as you learn from it and no real harm is done, don't worry about it. :)
 
i remeber once on the gallops, a newbie came to ride out, boss was telling her how to ride the gallops, said that when we go round the circle of trees, we line up and 'jump off' meaning we canter up the gallops....yep you guessed it, we got round the trees and she jumped off the horse!:D:D it was soooo funny, she was pretty embarrased tho!!
 
Everytime I feel half-competent around the horses I KNOW I am due for another mistake! Don't feel bad, that's horses for you! At least it sounds like you are on a lovely yard where people help each other out. Before you know, you will be running to someone else's rescue.

I have the pony club manual and have read it through - but nothing replaces learning by experience!
By the sounds of it being embarrassed is an ongoing risk of horse ownership!
As I say I'm just very lucky that those around me are happy to give help and advice (not in a pushy know-it-all way either)
 
Don't worry - I've been riding for 15 years and had horses for about 11 of those and the other day momentarily forgot how to do a quick release knot (I'll blame the cold weather).
 
Haha don't worry about it, we all do silly things now and again! I started riding again after a break when I was 14, and my first lesson went really really well... until I tried to get off and somehow ended up sitting on the floor underneath the horse. NO idea what happened, luckily I was on a lovely quiet cob who didn't even flinch! I still get embarrassed thinking about it!
 
In the summer, I got on my horse in the school and he moved so I fell off the other side! And someone was riding in the school at the same time! Axel went running off after her horse and she had to catch him for me. I was sooooo embarrassed!!
 
I wouldn't worry I've loaned/shared for 10 years and owned my own for the last year, worked on proffesional showing yards, riding schools and livery yards. I still managed to not tie up my pony properly last week and didn't notice until she was found merrily making her way out the yard at top speed!
 
WE all have to start somewhere, hey, dont worry.
I have put rugs on back to front, didnt know how to put bridle back together, how to make up feeds ect, that was only 3 years ago.
I now own 2 horses of my own with no problems.

hunny, I am 30 and have been riding since I was 11, you should have seen me juggling my 2 this week trying to turn them out into the field from the yard, I thought I would be so chilled and cool to just open the stables and let them walk out to the field, they mooched around, went anywhere but the field gate!!! then I put a headcollar on ben, turned him out and he stood at the gate so I couldn't get eb's out without him running back in the yard, It has taken me with 20 years of horses, 5 days to perfect the turnout technique for these two!! I have looked like I was in a slapstick comedy every morning :D:D:D

Horses are sent from god to show us up at every opportunity they have, the behave like tits for us and then like saints for others just to make us want the ground to swallow us up whole.

Ah trust me, we all do embarrassing things!

My most embarrassing was when I was sorting out the muck heap, didn't realise my foot was in the way. Yep, you guessed it, stabbed myself right in the foot and chipped a bone! The amount of people squealing with laughter as I hopped around crying with laughter (was either laughter or pain), was very embarrassing.

Oh, and I've also been legged up by my dad, straight over the other side of the pony where I landed it a heap, infront of a crowd of people watching people ride in the arena I was in :P .

I agree, I learn something new everyday!
