They didn't have micronised, so got some oil. Pony won't eat it. And when I say won't eat it, I mean snorting at the bucket, rolling his eyes and running to the back of the stable. I got very excited when his bucket was empty this morning, but turns out he's just tipped it all into his water.

I love him to pieces, but really! It's like trying to make a child eat vegetables.

Do I persevere, and just give him a little drip of it until he eats it and then increase, at the risk of wasting all his food and supplements? Or do I make a separate feed with just linseed and chaff, even though without the oats etc it will be less appetising. Has anyone's horse come round to something they (very dramatically) wouldn't eat at first? How long did it take? D:

As an aside, he is going BEAUTIFULLY at the moment, so I am forgiving his eating habits for now ;)

None of mine like even vegetable oil, and linseed oil is quite strong - depends on how much you bought but you would be much better off with the micronized version. And don't be fobbed off with linseed lozenges - expensive by product of removal of the oil, with molasses added (*rollseyes*) with relatively low oil content. You can get the micronized from Wynnstay if you are anywhere they have a branch, or on line from Charnwood or GW Titmus.

I enquired at Wynnsatay for micronised and they said they dont stock it. you can always add a dollop of mollases to disguise the taste :-) of the oil. this is what I did til got a sack of micronised from Charnwood. other than that start with a tea spoon and when they are used to it build up the amount slowly.

Wynnstay don't stock it (well, my branch do) but they will get it to order. Tell them they have to order it from Youngs for you - I know someone who works for Youngs and she confirms it, also the staff in my branch have got us 3 or 4 bags so far. The ordering from Youngs has been fairly recent though - in the last couple of weeks.

Charnwood deliver to anywhere you want - home or yard. My two love it, and my old gelding can be a bit funny about new things. He's 21 and did really well on it living out last winter with a bit of AlphaA, definitely recommend it.

H loves any sort of oil so never had that problem, but she was not keen on the Skratch at first. I just started with really small amounts and built it up slowly, but had to make sure the feed wasn't too wet. Could you give him 2 feeds? A small one with it to start (when he's hungry) then the rest of his usual feed as dessert?
My old horse was a real fussing b**ger and I used to add mint to his feed, might be healthier than molasses to mask it.

Order it from Charnwood Milling. Delivery is quite expensive but they bring it the next day and one bag lasts forever so you aren't paying out every week for it. I don't bother to feed oil, it's pretty pointless.

Thanks guys :) I think it's the smell as he wouldn't even go anywhere near it. He's always had vegetable oil no problems, and when I first got him had cod liver oil and cider vinegar no problems, I think he's gotten spoilt after living with me for so long!! :p I'll see if I can disguise it, and when the oils finished will definitely stick to micronised. Horses eh!!

I havent tried the oil but my mare is ok with the micronised linseed.

If i give her something she didnt like we have a snorting tantrum promptly followed by picking the feed bucket up by its handles and slinging it across the stable then looking at me suspiciously when i give her a replacement feed

Thank you. will do!

My local BRILLIANT feed shop now get it in to order for me, but i was getting it from 'Farm and pet place' as it`s so much cheaper, it`s still the brand 'Charnwood Milling' stuff, but a heck of a lot cheaper postage costs, and super quick delivery :)

Mine hate oil, won`t touch their feeds even with the tiniest bit in, but will polish off any feeds with the micronised linseed in it x

I think you'll find that linseed oil is in paint and products that feed/treat wood furniture and can be found on the shelves of b&q. Micronised linseed however is yummy food and esp if you add a bit of hot water to it, even I fancy it then!

Try 'proper' linseed (much cheaper too). Buy it, cook it thoroughly and turn it into his normal feed. Never met a horse that didn't love it - especially if it's still warm.

Agreed, but I don't even bother to boil it anymore. Boiling destroys a lot of the benefits. I bung in whole linseed. Ooh, it's nice on my porridge too! There's lots of info on the net about feeding whole linseed and cyanide poisoning - worth a look if you're worried.

Doesn't it pass right through them, with the hard shell it has, like whole oats do? You would have to grind it up wouldn't you?

I thought so, but there is research out there to say otherwise and it is digested but the husk that is expelled as with whole oats apparently. I used to boil it to snot consistency but then of course the boiling process destroys so much of what makes it good. Loads on google and I'd rather people came to their own conclusions but I've had good results, especially with an itchy youngster :)

You could try soya or veg oil instead if its for condition? Maybe not as good as linseed but worth a go if yours eats it. Mine (including picky ones) would literally slurp the soya and veg oil neat out of a scoop!
