I have scoured the Ad's online for days now looking for my forever horse, my new best friend. Can I find him/her ? No Am I fussy ? No. All I want is a nice little 14.3 -15.2 middleweight to cob. Age is imaterial but 3 plus, doesnt need to be broken, doesnt need to be show quality, I dont want to use the term ugly but to me ugly is fine. He/ she doesnt need to be well schooled, I can do all of that. What he / she does need is a temperment that is kind and laid back. And what do I expect to pay for this ugly unschooled poss unbroken horse, a fair price. I am only wanting to hack out with the kids, do a few sponsored rides and in the days of a so called recession, onset of winter, hay and straw prices at a record high I dont really expect to pay any more than about £1500. I dont want to drive 100 miles but will happily drive 50. I dont need it delivered I can collect myself, I dont want it to pass a 5 star vetting. I will not be a timewaster, I am only trying to buy a horse I will keep forever.
Can I find one........ No!!!

The sun is shining it's warm, so prices aren't dropping just yet and people are still pricing their neds up high, just wait for the cold weather and the hay prices and feedstuff prices go up, then start looking, but seeing my feedbill with the new prices, I'm not sure I'd be wanting to buy and I had thought about a 5th Ned this winter.

Risk the horse sales. At my local ones things are going dirt cheap and many are good honest horses. A lot of young cobs too.

Hey, I just paid a LOT more than that - and my new horse won't let me touch her. Am I disappointed ? VERY. It seems to me that once you hand the money over, the vendor tells you all the funny things about the horse.

They are there! I bought this for a third of your budget in April. She was just four and unbroken. (Picutred with my friend)

Fast forward a few months and this is Tilly now. She's turned out well *so far*. Seen ridden below by the lad who has broken her for us. :)

The highlight was last Friday when my daughter got on her for the first time!

Sorry for the picture overload. Just to reiterate there ARE bargains to be had, Matilda (aka Tilly) is proof of this. She is such a genuine little mare, sweet on the ground and an all round pleasure to own.

Good luck in finding yours.

I've got a rising 3 year old (well next Spring!)coloured filly who I would possibly part with to a perfect forever home but certainly not for any less than £1500 as she is a fantastic temperament and is going to be fabulous (well I think so LOL!)
You don't say where you are so difficult to say if we are 50 miles or more from you!!
(BTW she isn't ugly either, quite the opposite!)

She is gorgeous patches you must be very proud of her. I am down in Somerset and unfortunatley with almost touchin 13 stone I am afraid I would just squash you little pony suzie but thanks.
Can anyone recommend any horse sales. I have bought 2 ponies for my children over the years from the sales but this is the first time for me. I was thinking if maybe the cobsales Brightwells are holding and also the sale at hay on wye, any experiences of these or leominster? We are in the southwest in Somerset. maybe I should start a new thread on the sales, what do you think?

Wander down to your nearest sales, whereever that might be, and you'll have a choice of many unbroken 3yo cobby types well under your budget

Would you be prepared to travel to West Wales? There is Llanybydder sale the last Thursday of every month, yes there are quite a few dodgy ones that are sold there but there are also many genuine ones as well, you just need to know what your looking for. To be honest if your prepared to take on an unbroken one its even better as it wont (hopefully) have been messed with. Its a big sale & worth traveling to, but you do need to be quite hard when you walk round or you will end up bringing several home.

At the risk of advertising... Langaller stud are having a no reserve sale (Google them) and henryhorn on here still has homebred youngsters for sale, mostly by their own lovely natured stallion.

Or you could have my 3/4 section D x Appaloosa spotty filly, turned three and going to be backed ready to back - she's within your budget and we're ten minutes from Exeter!

could agree with you more op.

I've been looking for another horse for months.

Don't care what it looks like, how old it is etc, it can have a few lumps and bumps. All it needs is four legs and be willing to go forwards (as opposed to backwards / sideways like my ID/TB!!)

Only going to be used for gentle hacking.

You'd think I was trying to buy the next gold cup winner!!

Patches, Matilda is a little stunner - just wanted to say congratulations ! I got Shy as a 2 1/2 year old for very little money, and he's a superstar too. I found him when we were out dog walking, and he was in field by the path. " I WANT THAT PONY " - chase round the village to find the owner, and he's mine !

The right horse will find you, when you least expect it ! sm x

i no of a 15hh coloured chunky cob for sale in that price range. brilliant temp and to ride. pm me if you want the girls number

Where are you looking?

I found loads locally using local ads, ads in tack shops, preloved.co.uk.

I just paid 1.5k for a 5 yo purebred arab of excellent breeding, backed and started by Tina Bennett ( apparantly this is good, but I know nowt about the world of arab showing). Admittedly it was from someone I know, and I guaranteed a good home for life, but he was actually advertised at 3k. I gave a take-it-or-leave it offer and yep, they took it. He's not to everyones taste- arabs are a bit like Marmite and he needs bringing on - but he's a long-term project for me and I factored everything into my offer.

Be a bit cheeky re the price...you never know.

You should get yourself to Leominster.

Plenty for sale there below 1500...14.2 - 17hh

And it's a WARRANTED sale.

Ditto, was just going to say you should go to Leominster, would think you would get plenty of change out of £1500.

A friend has just bought a lovely 15hh, 4 year old mare from Leominster for just under £500, apparently she is a really nice little mare :)

I'd give Leominster a go - they have monthly sales and the next one is Friday week - 17th. They have been so over-subscribed that they actually had an additional sale last Friday. I was at the one a fortnight ago and nice looking horses were going cheap as chips. Have a look on Brightwells webby and you can see how much horses sold for in past sales - bear in mind that they generally start with the biggest and get smaller.

It's not a bad run for you from Somerset either. And they do cracking bacon rolls :D

Thankyou, have decided to give leominster a go, so looking forwards to it. Hoping to only come back with one but know I will feel terribly sorry for another and come back with two. However we have plenty of room and our winters haylage is in and stacked so at the end of the day....................;)

well, you wont feel sorry for anything at Leo, as nothing is poor there,
everything is of good quality.
