I know this wont be a big deal to many of you, but my previously non horse OH, who I have been teaching to ride on our new boy, had his first canter yesterday!
grin.gif

OH used to be terrified to even trot, and I cant tell you the arguments we have had about doing rising trot and his position! Think teaching your partner to drive type arguments LOL.

Anyway since we got Beau, he has come on leaps on bounds, mainly because unlike our other horse, Beau is actually big enough for him at 17.3hh, OH is 6ft4, and also because Beau is SO honest and genuine, whereas our other horse just takes the mick out of him!

Please be kind because it is his first ever canter, but I think he has done brilliantly, luckily Beau is such a dude that he took care of all the steering, pace etc.

We werent planning on cantering but the horses are so full of beans at the mo that we decided to let him have a bit of fun and Beau is so safe, well I couldnt ask for more!!

Also, FUNNY pics, OH has yet to obtain chaps and ahem, check out the pics below his cantering vid of his legs after riding. How is that even possible, his leg hairs have kind of balled up into knots LMAO! Poor thing, neeldess to say...Ive ordered him some chaps!

Very good he sits nice n straight. Well done with your teaching.
Also PMSL at his hair balls!!!!

Thank you! He used to be petrified of even grooming the shetland, now he cant get enough!

Saying that he only has this confidence on Beau, with our other one he loves him and will groom him etc, but wont get on his back! He is a monkey though!

It just shows what trust can mean, Beau tried it on a bit today when he rode him in a large field, and OH really put his foot down and Made him behave, I was very impressed!

looking pretty good for a first attempt at cantering
smile.gif

PMSL at the leg hairs - that looks painful too!

haha that gave me a laugh, Beau has just become one of those "horse in a million" types hasnt he, your OH looks perfectly secure though

Well done to your OH! Very good balance for a first attempt I'd say. Was he buzzing afterwards? Can still remember my OH (who was un-horsey when I met him but has been very successfully converted!) coming home walking on air after his first canter !

PMSL at the hair balls! I would love to have a man that took an interest in my hobby, I think flash would really help put him in his place too. Looks liek you've taught him well, he sits up nice and straight

I'm very impressed and PMSL at the hairballs, was nearly in tears, spose he could always shave them like my Lance Armstrong wannabe husband!

he he yes he DID shave the hair balls off! They would not uncurl LOL

Look at those hairy balls!!!! Oooops I mean hair balls.......they are the funniest thing I have ever seen

Yes he was buzzing!! He is very proud of himself, he wanted to do it again today but his legs were too sore so he stuck to walking

Look at those hairy balls!!!

Ooops I mean hair balls
grin.gif
I hate riding without chaps or long boots but have to say I have never suffered that effect

He did really well and has the makings of a nice quiet rider. Tell him well done!

Aww thanks! Im very proud of him, this was the man who said it was IMPOSSIBLE to rise and trot, and impossible to ride with your heels down, he rode like a ballerina at first, all his weight on his toes pointing down, just shows gentle and persistant nagging works!
smirk.gif

OH was asking me if we can go to some local shows for a look next weekend, he said he wants to aim to do some classes, bless him.
grin.gif

OMG get the man to a show
ooo.gif
I really wish my hubby would ask to go
crazy.gif

Mind you he has just sent me an email (he works away) with a load of stables on it in Florida and told me I have to organise a ride for all the family in July when we go
grin.gif
laugh.gif

Aww that sounds fab! he he just keep encouraging him!

Well OH was asking me this evening what paper he should buy tomorrow so he can see the show listings for the next few weeks, I told him and he said ok I will pick it up tomorrow.
Then went on to tell mehe would like to go to shows displaying a variety of classes because he really wants to get a feel for what each class involves before deciding what to aim for.

ahem, gobsmacked! This is the man whose longest sentences usually consists of the words CAR, or PC.
smile.gif

thats great news. Hes coming on loads. Hell be stealing your horse soon and taking off to shows etc.
Youll have to get waxing his legs for him whether he gets his chaps or not. Bet the hair balls were rather painfull.

So husband is adding a new word to his list of vocabulary - HORSE. didnt think most OH halves liked that word.

Oh, the poor chap!!!! You MUST get him some chaps before his next lesson! I think his hand position was very good, not holding on by the reins etc. If he feels brave enough, get him to hold his reins in one hand, with possibly a neckstrap, and hold the back, cantle of the saddle with the other. The first time I did that, when I was learning 50 odd years ago, it felt wonderful. Instead of my bum going bang, bang it stayed in contact with the saddle the whole time. Try it!!!!

Tell him from me he looks bl**dy good!

excellent! got my other half on Ty yesterday and he was cantering around on him! he said he's only ridden as a child but I was very impressed....told him I'd have him buying his own horse by next summer! haa haa x

LOL! Well he is finally getting used to Beau's new short mane now too, When I first did it (thank you agian for solocomb ECW) , he said Beau looked like Dwayne Dibley from Red Dwarf!
crazy.gif

yes got to say the short mane looks loverly. Next time hubbie be taking over in the beauty parlour!

ETS - your more than welcome - btw did you ever find a big enough weigh tape?

Unfortunately not, they all seem to only go to 603kg, we have a weighbridge near us but Beau wont fit in a trailer so when he is a bit more experienced im going to hack him to it and get a true weight, for now Im just estimating with the 603kg tape.

Ho hum you would think they would cater for heavier horses, so many people own big horses these days.

Woooow well done OH !

And Beau is a gem of a horse !
