So I will be picking Toby up tomorrow. His stable is all ready, got to pick up a few more bits before I leave to get him.
To say I am scared is an understatement. Earlier in the week, I was beginning to feel quite relaxed with it, but now its hit me!!

To top it off, my friend who's horse needed scoping for strangles had the worse news. He has strangles and is also likely to be carrier! She pretty much broke down when she told me. I could bearly keep her focused!! She is so scared of being chucked off the yard, but really, its not her fault if all the other horses have it, the YO isn't particularly strict with the isolation period, and everyone on the yard is now kicking off!! I feel so bad, and it has proper spooked me!!

I think she is going to continue with treatment, and hope her horse pulls through OK, but I have no idea what the YO's plans are?

Are you moving your horse onto the yard with strangles? If so, please don't!!! Find another yard and leave him where he is until you do. Horses should not be moved on or off a yard that has strangles, this isn't the law but you would be absolutely mad to do it and if the yard owner has any scruples they won't allow movement of horses until the yard has had the all clear from the attending vet.

oh good luck with picking Toby up tomorrow, I hope that everything goes well for you! your poor friend, I hope her boy pulls through and hope that none of the other horses get it/carry it on your new yard! xx

Don't panic... I am not keeping Toby at that yard, so he is safe! :)

How exciting! Good luck, make sure you take lots of advice from people in the know (and ignore those who are all the gear, no idea!). Agree that you should avoid moving on to a yard with strangles if at all possible - even if it means keeping your boy on grass livery for a few weeks, I know you want to ride asap but you'll have bonding time and if he gets poorly you won't be able to ride. Strangles is really nasty and very infectious, but more often than not horses recover and don't have too bad a time of it - I know the pictures you see online are grim but in most cases it's just like us having a really, really nasty bout of flu. As long as everyone is sensible and disinfects stables with Jeyes etc it shouldn't be a problem in the long term.

Most importantly is that you take the time to get to know your boy - don't feel pressurised or rushed into anything, you'll have lots of lovely years together so it's worth taking things at your own pace now and building a really good partnership.

Congratulations, enjoy your horse and the fact that you have neither spare time or money, your nails will never be the same
again and you will get used to wearing old clothes :D

I'm so excited for you!!!! Good luck take dozens of photos and upload them all! So sorry for your friend, I can't imagine how she.must be feeling it would distroy me :( I hope she has a happy outcome x

That is so exciting, congrats on becoming a horse owner, it really is the best thing ever! Even if I now spend more money on my boy than do on myself, he has lovely new rugs, and his saddle I ordered from fitter (cos he is a very awkward fit) is worth more than my car (which is an old fiat) lol.

Lots of pics please and can't wait to hear about your adventures :)

Good luck for today. Hope all goes smoothly and he settles in well.

Please make sure your friend with the horse with strangles follows strict cross infection if she's visiting you and your new horse, it can be carried on mucus on clothing etc and easily transmitted. I'm sure you know this though ;)
