So what are people using instead of grass pellets?

I've been using Dengie grass pellets for several months now, and have been very pleased with them. But supplies have now run out everywhere til the next harvest, so I am forced to have a back up plan.

I 'think' that I have successfully placed an order for Agrobs Wiesencobs, which is what I used to use til I decided that Agrobs was a load of hype. They'll do, if they actually arrive. Just need something non heating to mix in the supplements, linseed, oily herbs etc.

What are other people using?

My local supplier managed to get the last pallet of EG in the country so I'm ok until they're on 24/7 turnout (which happens later here because of the rain/precious YO). I've upped the SB though to eke them out, just in case.

Same here, no grass nuts available, not a brilliant alternative but I had to buy spillers speedy mash fibre. At least it is 10% sugar/starch and she only has 250g a day with balancer mixed in then soaked. She blooming loves it though.

Oh no. I didn’t know supplies had run out. I use grass pellets and Agrobs all winter as my horses can‘t have access to grass without turning the fields into a black morass whilst risking skin and hoof issues. I haven’t seen Dengie Meadow Grass here for months though. I would give them that as well through the winter if I could get hold of it.

We’ve not been able to get grass nuts into work for over a month. We usually get northern crop growers ones in but they ran out a while ago.

We had a good grass growing year up here but it’s amazing how difficult it is to explain to folk that south there was a drought and because of that there was less grass to make them and more people needing to use them. 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

I upped the speedibeet when we ran out. And fortunately could use alfalfa pellets.

emerald green meadow magic pellets are just plain grass, no alfalfa….I shouldn’t really be recommending them as they will then run out too😂. They are suitable for ems as under 10% sugar/starch

I have 10 or 15 kilos of Argo? grass nuts I can't use if anyone near Congleton wants to pick them up from me. They've been in a box since last October when I stopped feeding them.

Agrobs. Been using them years.
I dont give much, so a bag lasts a couple of months.
I use the weisenflakes as they are quicker to soak.
(It does help that I live near the distributor, so I don't have supply issues).

(Edit to say, even really fussy feeders seem to love them).

I was reading similar on fb this week. Why are they so hard to source?
We (personally, maybe we got lucky) had a fantastic hay crop last summer

We are surrounded by Northern Crop Dryers grass fields and they had two fewer crops off them last year to usual, and the crops that they did take were lighter than in other years too.

This is on clay soils that retain moisture to a degree in drought years. Anywhere with sandy soild would have even less crop growth.

I'm bumping this thread as I need to order some more grass pellets or equivalent, and Dengie grass pellets are still out of stock at Equisupermarket. I imagine that they are still in the course of production from the 2023 harvest.

OldNag, how long do the Wiesenflakes take to soak? I've been using the Wiesencobs which the horses love, but they need soaking for several hours even in summer. Something that is ready to feed in 5/10 mins would be better.

I know the manufacturer is not popular but... My mare does look exceptionally well on the Thunderbrooks Organic Meadow Nuts 😬 (basically just many grasses in one nut).

I know it's not a straight but Fast Fibre is excellent for this weather as it soaks instantly so perfect for a quick freshly made mash to put my mare's oily herbs in, linseed and other joint supplements!

Equisupermarket appear to have emerald green and simple systems pellets.

Apologies for hi-jacking the thread - how attracted are rats to the grass pellets? If I ordred a pallet, would they need to be somewhere rat proof, or would just dry and clean do?

When we used to order pallets of emerald green grass nuts, they seemed fine.

IME rats dont typically eat grass nuts or grass chaff.

But I have had rats that used to chew plastic and wood for no reason whatsoever at a different yard, it didnt gain them access just because they could I think.
