Just curious really following on from all the posts about horses not selling, people asking too much, people worried about cost and "how much" posts etc.

What have you advertised and sold quickly

just write potential eventer at the bottom than whack on an extra few grand. eventing is in fashion at the moment i think though not if balloting continues!!

Well the only one i would buy at the moment is a rocking horse as they cost zero to keep

Cheap ones!

A friend of mine has just acquired 2 horses. One for less than £1k, 9yr old, has a few quirks. Owners had sent horse to a dealer for 'selling on behalf of', horse not sold, so they gave up, wanted rid and practically gave it away.

Other one, my friend has been given it for free as owners fed up with the numpties coming for a look. These 'buyers' were prepared to pay the very reasonable asking price but didn't have the ability/knowledge for horse ownership as far as the seller was concerned.

She couldn't bear the hassle so gave the horse away!

Well I THINK I've sold my ultra safe take-a-novice anywhere hack/ PC pony, who lives on grass and/or hay, only needs shoeing at the front, hasn't needed the vet in five years, is placed in nearly every jumping class and can get round an Intro in a minute under the time, 15.1 Welsh.

I reckon I could have sold him several times over and have certainly turned down people who would have paid up but who I wouldn't sell him to.

eta

He certainly wasn't cheap

Fingers crossed (i.e. subject to vet) I have just sold a nice looking safe sane 8yo TB as a hack/allrounder for a fair sum and very quickly.

I think people want something for nothing TBH,
Been there got the t-shirt, affiliated SJ, XC PC club etc etc,
But I think sellers are getting to the point where they are getting greedy!
I saw 1 for sale not long ago, hadn't done half as much as Bear has Even thought it was a year older and the same size, won't hack out alone etc.. They were asking £2800!!
If thats worth that then Bears worth £3500!!

Eventers!
I've just been reading Cluedo's thread on why her lovely chestnut horse hasn't sold, and I found the comments very interesting, I actually thought for his type, temperament and record he was pretty cheap for £10k... Maybe that's because I'm used to buying (and to a lesser extent, selling) event horses. Maybe I'm wrong but eventers and potential eventers do seem to command more money than other disciplines for a similar level of ability and competition record. Particularly if you advertise them on sites like horseselect (a sales site aimed specifically at eventers) which seem to attract people who don't blink at £10k-plus price tags. In fact from my experience on horseselect you'd be hard-pushed to find anything for sale for under £8k, even for an unproven 4/5 year old. I sold my 7 year old novice eventer, which wasn't anywhere near as nice as Cluedo's horse, or as talented/well-schooled dressage and SJ-wise, in a week for the asking price of £12,500... I had millions of calls and I was kicking myself for not asking for £15k as several people told me he was underpriced!!!! His competition record wasn't spectacular either, he had several low placings at novice level and a very consistent XC record, but nothing more. He never did any BSJA, BD or affiliated showing. So the only difference I can see is that Cluedo's horse hadn't evented. I sold mine in 2006 and whilst I accept the market may have slowed down a bit recently I can't imagine prices have changed, or dropped, that much.

most popular ads go like this-

kind 16hh id x tb, riding club horse, safe honest type hard to find, has hunted and been placed at dressage , 8 years old, daughter going to uni forces sale, good to box, shoe, clip and good in traffic - 4k

you would sell one of them every day if you had it to sell!!!

Wonder if mine would sel... (he's not for sale)

15.2 flashy tersk gelding (think anglo arab type), honest and genuine. Previously schooled to med level dressage with unaff winnings at Elem, and BD points (I ran out of money). Regularly hunted with bloodhounds, 2 seasons, proving mannerly and safe with good breaks. Does ride and lead with childs pony, can be used as beginners lesson horse as well as be fun for competant rider. Placed 3rd in only trec competition, super for endurance or pleasure rides, enjoys x/c, jumps hedges ditches and water. 100% in the heaviest traffic, loads trailer/box by himself, waits at gate to come in, farriers friend, hacks alone and in company and vet only knows him for vacs. Snaffle mouth at all times. Currently being broken to harness and seems to have been born to it.

Donadea, I had read Cluedos post with interest too and i did wonder whether it could be worth her while advertsing for more to be honest as I think maybe she is on the border line for different markets of buyers - if you get my drift. I think there are some (crazy!) people who don't really consider horses under a certain value! Cluedos certainly looked a very nice animal and if he's as good as she said I think he's reasonably priced. Hmm, notice you're in a similar area to me too maybe horses up here people are just expecting to pay that sprt of amount?! I know of tonnes of pony club mums and dads who think nothing of spending £10K on a horse for their son/daughter!

Well I think I have decided to sell Porridge, just got to put the advert together now

She *should* sell easily as she is so super safe, such an amazingly good hack, 100% brilliant hunter, exemplary on fun rides and jumps anything - will stand and let others gallop away and not be bothered, SJs, dressages, turns her hoof at anything and is as challenging or as easy as you want...I will prob dither around for ages yet though, I would just like someone to come take her without me having to do the numpty calls *sigh*

I want!!!!!!!!!!!1

My friend is looking for a 13.2hh PC pony that will jump up to 1m and have a bit of all round fun, for about £3500, must be a gelding and shes only found one to go and look at!!

Good large registered native ponies suitable for an adult or child with no ailments.

It took me 6 months to find my 5 yr old 14h NF and I paid just over 3k and he is green but very genuine and 100% in traffic. I was the first to view and bought him after he passed 5 stage vetting so they sold within a week!

Connemara's very popular at the moment and so are steady cobs that can hack out and do RC too.

I'm not really sure about what's selling... I keep being told that the market for foals, especially colts, is terrible at the moment, but one of my stally's first babies has just sold for a v good price - and he wasn't even advertised (in fact the breeder didn't want to sell and had to be persuaded)!

In general, though, I think really good photos are essential. So many advertisers seem to use any old rubbish photos and then wonder why they don't get any buyers!

Ready to compete good qauilty riding club horses/alrounders - Well mine sold very quickly and I had alot of interest. 16.1HH, six years old, schooled on flat, over showjumps and cross country. Good to hack etc. But not a novices horse - Give an inch and he'd take several miles!! Price was £4250 with hidsight we could of got more. I had quite a few people wanting a first horse foor the daughter/son willing to spent that sort of money wanting to do abit of all.
