Please could I have any recommendations for an ultra soft/silky midge rug or fly rug with belly flap....

I have a ridiculously sensitive horse who loathes midges, doesn't have sweet itch as such, but comes up in bumps from their bites..... and doesn't tolerate flies that well either!

However he also hates anything that pulls at his rather fine haired coat....and once he has decided he is not happy, he rolls and rolls and then just gallops himself into a stupid hot frenzy!
So close weave not mesh...and as cool as possible. He doesn't trash rugs, so can be lightweight. He hates sheepskin numnahs too!

I've tried a Boett....too hot then starts rolling/galloping
an Amigo bug buster... the mesh pulls at his coat...same response
an amigo Mio...best so far, but still reacts.
NO rug....Ok if I get the timing/weather right, but frequently not possible!
Fly sprays etc makes no difference with the exception of Killitch which helps a little.

Any rug recommendations gratefully received before I give up!!! If I bring him in, even on his own, he just chills out and eats hay....I keep telling him he is a horse not a prima donna, and summer/grass turnout is supposed to be good for him!!!
I've tried all times of day/night.
In the winter he has all weather turnout and is as happy as larry for hours!

The Horseware Rambo Hoody, good strong cotton type of material. My sensitive mare also became very fidgety if the net type of ones ruffled her coat. I also had to be very careful to place the whole rug up on her neck and then carefully lifted it down to her rear end to avoid the risk of ruffling her air as it was put on. She wore hers in all weathers right through the summer season without any issues. One of my sensitive little donkeys now also has his own Rambo Hoody and he seems happier in it too.

Amigo Aussie rug?
I think both of these are similar in fabric to the Boett that he got too hot in….a dense weave cotton appearance?……can you let me know if I am wrong please?!…. Or maybe they “breathe” better than the Boett.??

Yes they are both a dense weave cotton type, but I think the less expensive Aussie one is a lighter material......I think as far as I can remember. Plus it is only a fly rug and does not offer as much covering as the Rambo Hoody does. The worst bit IME is the low loose neck, midges can easily get to the neck area and destroy their neck line and mane once they start itching.

I am currently using the Equilibrium field relief fly rug for sensitive madam, its soft and silky and a good fit as it fits like the Horseware Ireland rugs and its got hexagon pattern which i'm told reminds people of the old blockbuster tv show! 😂 Although I am sadly to young to have seen it.

Also I love the Premier Equine Supalite fly rugs. I use those on my other two.
^^^ This! I was just trying to remember what they were called.

I'm thinking "DressageCob" that these are the ones made out of a gauze/mesh type material?? As opposed to the normal kind of fabric used. I had one for my old lad; it was an excellent rug; however I did find that it wasn't quite so hardwearing as a normal rug (probably due to the fine-ness of the material). However it did the job well and it is a rug you can chuck on if you think it might rain, as it won't go all heavy and saggy like other materials.

Have been thinking of getting them for my current mare (gypsy cob) tbh.

Shires Tempest Original might be worth a try as it isn’t expensive. It’s very slinky and reflects the heat superbly - I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

Yes, it's a silver nylon rug. I've not had any problems with it being hardwearing; each one I've bought has lasted two summers, which isn't bad for a fly rug. They do eventually fray over the seam down the middle of the back. They are on sale at the moment.
