My two boys had really tough, good, healthy feet. On monday we moved them to our new property only to find that the week before the move the field had been drilled for bore holes and so tractors and plant had been all over it. Most of the 2.5 arce paddock is mud. since moving the boys their strong feet has become very soft. When you pick their feet out the sole is white and soft and comes away with the hoof pick. What can I do/feed to help protect their feet. They are currently electric fenced onto a 20 x 40 metre sized patch when there is only limited mud - the grass that is still standing is good grass so its very frustraiting. I dont have stables to stand them in. Any advice/reccomendations?

moisture is the problem.. the same as in winter. Nothing you can feed, as this is the hoof responding as it should do to soft ground. You can tru putting and oil based hoof product all over the CLEAN foot including the frog and sole which may act as a barrier.

The sole crumbling away is nothing to be particularly concerned about unless there are obvious signs of thrush.

Thanks - I am aware that this is a natural response- it is the severity of the response that conserns me- you can barely pick the feet out without gouging into the hoof and they have begun to smell although not specifically thrushy. The boys seem ok, I just dont like how soft the feet are.

There is a gel from keratex that you can paint on giving protection against wet conditions.I ordered some on line direct from keratex and also used the hardener for daughters previous loan horse .

I have started using the Keratex Daily Barrier on one of mine, it allows the hoof to breathe and supposedly keeps the moisture balance by not allowing excess water in. Time will tell. There is also another one by Net-tex called "winter hoof" (or similar)
