Hi all
After much pondering, I one of my Welsh Cobs up for and he's been bought by a fantastic family, who will have him as part of the family - couldn't have wished for a better match tbh.

He's 7 and I've owned him since he was 10 months old and known him since he was 5 months.

I just know I'll go to pieces when it's time to say goodbye:( I'm dreading it, already choking up every morning when I'm doing him. I'll have the other D to keep me going but it's something I thought I'd never do. I'm finding it hard but I know it's for the best and he will have a fantastic, fun filled life of hacking, dressage, camp and some shows with a family who all ride.

Will I look like a plonker for balling my eyes out? I know it will hit me like a brick when the lorry turns up ..

I feel sorry for you. I've owned six horses now, and apart from the mental case one that I sold which was my first one (many years before having the other five) I would never sell a horse, the previous five all sadly died.

If I buy a horse is forever. Can't imagine selling Bails, I would rather pull my teeth out one by one. But you must have your reasons, so I am not criticizing you, it must be very hard to let go

Think about all the reasons you're selling him.
Think about why selling him is the best thing for HIM.
Think about all the fun he's going to have with his new family.
Think about all the pics you'll get to see of this horse having fun, the horse you made sure had a good foundation that has allowed him to go become a fun little horse!

^^ this :)
Of course you're allowed to have a weep when he goes, it's only natural when they mean a lot to you.

I have my reasons for selling and trust me, it's not been easy at all. I love showing and sadly he's not forward enough for me and he deserves a more fun loving home, where he gets a variety of everything. I've had such fun with him, he's a bombproof hack and his new owner will be keeping him forever, they already have one that they've owned for 22 years. I'll 100% be keeping the other D for life. I've gone as far as I can with this boy and now he can go and I know all he is, is what I've done with him. Life changing events have also happened and I can't manage 2 at this moment in time.
I think it's wonderful that you've got yours for life. :)
Saturday will be a hard day for me.

Thank you and yes, thinking like this does help! He's a tough nut and with thrive on all the attention! :) I've done a good job on creating a fab little Welshie! :)

It is hard but this is what I've said to my daughter about her pony going and it's the same for you really. It's great that you've learned so much from having that horse and that you've done such a good job turning it into such a lovely animal that will give someone else all the pleasure it gave you.

I do feel for you - I wouldn't worry about looking daft if you cry. I'm not saying they'll enjoy your suffering but I'm sure the family will be pleased to know how much you care about him and how hard it is for you to say goodbye. It will prove to them that you've been honest about your reasons for selling. I'd be very suspicious if a seller couldn't wait to get rid and run away! Wave him off, go and give your other one a big cwtch and have a sob into his mane - big Welshie manes absorb snot brilliantly.

Absolutely no shame in crying!

Think of all the new fun and exciting times he has ahead of him!

Hope all goes well

Cry. At least they know you are genuine. I haven't sold many but have always wept buckets. Worst was when we sold daughter's first pony and someone turned up to view with a horse box. I hadn't got my head round him going at that point. Any I have ever sold have always emailed pictures regularly which is really nice. Good luck, have Kleenex on hand.

I'd cry buckets. Perhaps warn the family and explain you won't be able to help it, but could they please just ignore it and you know he's going to a lovely home. That's what I'd do.

Have a think about what will make it easiest for you - a very quick handover and load will be better than anything long drawn out, so be prepared and have everything ready x

I cried when I sold my first pony, even though she was going to a local RDA, where I could visit her!

In fact, I also cried when I saw her up for sale again recently (A year on from original sale). And then I bought her back :p

My point being, it's okay to cry. Some people may see horses more as a commodity, and not get so attached to them or upset about them (and there's nothing wrong with that), but for others like ourselves, they're family, and it's okay to cry when we see them off to their new adventure :)

I would probably see it as a positive if the owner of the horse I was buying balled their eyes out. They would come across as very genuine people who clearly adored their horse and looked after him well. :) Good luck on Saturday.

My TB's old owner choked up when transport arrived. I felt really guilty but atleast I knew she loved him.

I'm very fortunate that I'm able to keep all mine for life. My pony I may of had to consider loaning or sharing at some point in the future, but thankfully I have a sister 10 years younger than myself and she'll be able to ride him until he's ready to retire an old man. I love him to bits and I've had him 6 years so I appreciate the kind of time and bond you must have.

Good luck, and just kind of try to enjoy your time with him now. It's with his best interests at heart, he's going to be a part of a wonderful family thanks to you! :-)

Cry if you want, there's no shame. Good luck OP xx

Oh lord, I'm getting teary just reading this thread! I don't know how people sell horses. I've been so lucky that mine have been able to be forever.

If it were me, I'd cry and not give a damn how I looked to anyone else. Then I'd have a bottle of whisky on standby for a dram or two and something scheduled to do that would help take my mind off things.

Good luck for Saturday. x

I sold my nutcase of a pony that tried to kill me on a daily basis to a companion home when I was a teenager. Literally scared the life out of me that pony but I still cried my eyes out when she left!
