Are they any good?

I want to pull my boys mane short, but up by his head it's so thick he looks like he has an afro :p. So I was debating on getting a solo comb, but someone told me they are a waste of money

I just want to give him a good tidy up :)

I hate seeing a solo combed mane. May as well use scissors. I use a thinning razor blade thing you used to get in boots but apparently now just get for dogs. Much nicer finish.

I love them, so much easier and when u have horses who hate having their manes done these teach them it's not all bad. All stand loose now to be done where as before I stuggled to do them.

I have pulled manes, trimmed then with scissors, used rakes, blades and solocombs.

I would ditch every single gadget and just stick to a proper pulling comb and a properly pulled mane. If pulled peroply then the mane thins itself.

Scissor cut manes loo bloody attorcious.

Raked manes - BLERGH!!! Never looks right and grows back like a pineapple.

Blades - neh - done well can be ok but I wouldn't recommend it.

Solocombs - Eh naw! Hate them! Have used one once and never will again! Bloody awful things.

With a very long mane i cut just a bit longer than i want the finish with scissors   then use a mane rake, i like the finish and it doesnt look like a pineapple  when it grows out. The only problem i have with one is its damn difficult to stop :D its so addictive to use!

Well I'm going to hold my hand up and say I like my solo comb! I'm one of those people who, if I had kids, would cut their hair myself all wonky, and I found I did less damage with a solo comb. Luckily the comedy cob's mane is now at 2' and I'm not planning to touch it :o

I wish they had invented solo combs when my daughter was little!! :D :D

Me too!! I think where people go wrong is because they think it is going to be quicker than pulling. In fact it takes just as long because you should only do a few hairs at a time to avoid the chopped look.

I am not easily pleased.. have prepared hunters and show ponies for HOYS etc so I know what they should look like. It's all down to patience and having a good eye for the line you want.

Another vote here for Solo Combs. I know pulled manes look fantastic but when you have a very itchy 16.3 giraffe horse who just WON'T put up with pulling :p you do have to look for alternatives. Done properly and taking care it is an acceptable finish.

Hate solo combs I have to admit I love the look a scissor cut mane looks like and I do it to my horse. Just make sure you wet mane proper before attempting it..!

If used correctly the finish is fab. I always use one. But I also use a rake to thin the mane first before finishing with the solo comb. I will see if I can find any pics tomorrow. It did take me a couple of years to get it right. The instructions tht come with the comb are not how I use it, and so I found them useless.

I don't mind them. I use a combination of a rake and solo comb throughout the winter when I'm not plaitting (thats when I don't like them - the mane is always more layered and doesn't plait as well). My husband's horse hates having his mane pulled, so I mostly solo comb his, apart from when he is sedated for his teeth, when I scalp him with a pulling comb while he is asleep! He is too big to get into a row with. My mare puts up with pulling, but I solo comb her in the winter too. I've got softer (and nicer to them) as I've got older!

Below is a photo of solo combed mane so you get an idea... Would look slightly more level if damped down! Not quite as good as a pulled mane, but I can live with it.

Thankyou for that picture. I want my boys mane a little bit longer, but as I said it's so thick at the top it just does it's own thing lol. We think he has NF in him & he has a typical thick frizzy NF mane thats goes wild :p
