Hi everyone, just need to get a few things off my chest really as I'm very bored!

I have seen/read so many incompetent things recently I cannot stand it any more! I am by no means an expert and I dont claim to be.

The one that has tipped me over the edge is the following off Facebook:

OP: So I bring my horse in from the field on Friday night and he's lame. I gave him a couple of bute and by morning he looked better so I chucked him out. Saturday night he comes in lame again, so I gave him my last 2 bute and chucked him back out as im away until Monday. Went up today and he's really lame on both fronts. Both feet have heat and he's shuffling. If he's no better by Wednesday ill call the farrier as i'm guessing an abcess??

A: then there is a ton of replies stating laminitis/vet/emergency/take off grass etc.

OP: I doubt very much its lami as horse is 15.3.

A:Why on earth does that matter??

OP: He's not a pony

A: Cue more responses telling this girl to call the vet

OP: I know my own horse and it isnt laminitus (argh hate it when people spell it like this!) He's 15.3, not overly fat and only been out in the field since Wednesday!!! How can it be????? I'll get the farrier to come at the weekend and dig the absesses out.

I stopped looking after reading that!

I have seen so many stupid things this week that I wont put on here in case people involved read, but my goodness I just want to throttle some people this week!

Sorry for the rant, just needed to let off some steam x

People really don't have a clue do they? They get an opinion, THINK it's right and forget about the horses welfare. Let's hope the horse is ok, makes me mad because if you're going to be stubborn about it you shouldn't own a horse! Horse ownership is about being open to different things for the welfare of the animal!

Sadly, you see a lot of that kind of thing on various FB pages, it rather shakes your faith in human nature :(

Having had a horse & a pony with abcsesses in both front feet at the same time it is certainly plausible, but it needs sorting not just chucking out, plus if thats what she thinks why isnt she poulticing them?

I left the page as I couldnt bare to see it any more. There were plenty of people already giving her good advice and being firm.

It's just so many things at the minute.

Most of the horses on my yard and friends horses have been turned away over winter. All coming back into work with no saddle checks for example and all are unfit but fast hacking for hours. Horses are playing up as saddles obviously dont fit, one started to rear, bits are being changed for pelhams, whips being carried etc. There's shouting all the time (Oi!, No!, dont you dare!, you little ****) All these naughty horses are more than likely in pain/uncomfortable doing more than they are capable of, but its me getting stick for not riding my horse as i'm waiting for his teeth back and saddle to be checked and lungeing him so he has some fitness and muscle for when I get on.

I dont take it personally at all, I rise above it as I know I am doing what's best for my horse but its their horses I worry for :(

When I got my first horse, back in 1996, I was stunned by the number of 'horsey people' who insisted that laminitis was a condition of ponies, and only ponies! Some of these people had been in horses for most of their lives and, yet, harboured this misconception unquestioningly. It's a good thing that I'm an avid reader, with a preference for reference works, otherwise my introduction into the world of equine ownership and husbandry could have resulted in needless heartbreak.

I think it comes down to the usual problems.

Horses can be chaep to buy.
That don't need to pass a test or know anything.
They throw it in a field.
Then try to keep it as cheaply as possible.

Very sad.

tell stupid OP to come visit my 16'3 hanovarian x that suffers from lami!

saying that...... he's a dun with yellow muzzle - surely Ive got a dartmoor on stilts? - that will be why mines laminitic!

honestly things like this boil my blood.... so "its only been out since wednesday" ... presuming horse has been in then its been thrown out onto (if she is luckier than me) spring grass -99% chance it is lami?

I'm glad its not just me that it's annoyed.

Becky&Ollie-x I have images on a cheeky Dartmoor pony on stilts now! I hope your horse is OK though? x

The sore horse thing is very sad. Sometimes I think it would be easier to live in California in dirt paddocks!

As far as unfit and coming back into work the wrong way, if the saddles don't fit that badly they never fit. Seriously it isn't rocket science. Really it's not that complicated and people really need to learn how a saddle should fit. And more importantly a saddle fitter isn't going to replace a bad fitness program. Those back muscles need to be built up differently before resuming normal work. A proper saddle fit and then not building properly still equals a sore horse. I know I'm sounding like a grump but the art of fitness is becoming lost. It's being replaced by "oh the saddle fitter and chiro will fix that". That's where the knowledge ends. Start learning!!!!!

100% agree. hear hear!

One thing having passports for horses but what about licences for horse ownership... may solve a few errr niggling problems :D

Do you really think so ?
It would end up as another box ticking performance , but surely if we are going to set off down that road we should start with prospective parents .

Yep EI well said once more!!

I'm bringing my veteran back to fitness in prep for some summer fun. He hasn't been I regular work since last summer and he will spend the next four weeks on the lunge with the pessoa to get him mucles over his back, then some short schooling sessions not for comp prep as he's comp retired but to get is back working and lots of lovely hills.

Saddle fitters and chiros aren't miracle workers! People seem to think they are but the work needs to be put into the horse musclewise IMO.

Does make you sad reading some things!

Sometimes I do think so GS... I have seen some people who really shouldn't have horses.

Absolutely agree that it probably would be a box-ticking exercise, unenforceable etc etc but in an ideal world.... *sigh*

It could be a pre-requisite to livery for example... this won't get the private yards obviously but it would be a start. I'm not talking big money licences but perhaps a "BHS Owners Certificate" (or suchlike) could be mandatory when purchasing, liverying, competing etc etc

But it wont, for the good people will jump through the hoops and get penilised for it, whereas there are always going to be people who skirt the issue and never do it...it cant be regulated like that.

They regulated guns...

There are lots of people who should not have horses I am not sure if some sort of box ticking exam would help.
Livery yards should licensed as riding schools are but it would make livery More expensive at the bottom end .
You see some of the best horsemen and women I have met have no pieces of paper and likewise I have known people with all the paperwork who I would not let near one of my horses neither of my grooms have " paperwork " but both are extremely compentant, capable and trustworthy .

Can't argue with you there GS... and tbh, I don't know the answer. I am just going about offering solutions, tongue-in-cheek as they may be :)

You are so right. I, for one, don't get my saddles rechecked. If I feel it needs stuffing/tweaking I get it done. When my horses come up they do walking road work, lots of it....before they even think about trotting. The more time spent on slow work the better for hardening tendons.

For all the grief that those who hunt are given, the majority do know how to get and keep a horse sound in the old fashioned way.

Whilst I am not knocking saddle fitters, chiros, physios, crystal swingers and all the rest of them there is no substitute for common sense and time

A consequence of horses being too cheap to keep and learning being to expensive in comparison. Many people sit on a horse and then baulk at paying for lessons when they can ride everyday on their own horse for less cost than two lessons. Trouble is they havent a clue about actually keeping a horse and its welfare and possible illnesses and accidents.
I called a vet for a fellow livery as their horse had colic they were more worried by the bill than the horse I did call them first and they hadnt recognised the horse was ill 10 minutes before I arrived
He luckily lived to tell the tale but the outcome could have been very different
