Some people should just not be on DIY livery..

We dont have DIY @ our yard , we have grass or full! Grass liverys are still checked by Yard staff every day , brought in to be fed etc....
Silly question but should a yard that offer DIY not have a solid contract which lays out T& C's such as checking daily, turnout, feeding etc & 3 strikes & your out??
 
Some people are just a waste of oxygen. Doubt that would work showpony. Decent yo/yms would do something anyway, useless ones just wouldn't bother. So a contract outlining daily management is a waste of time.
 
I'm so glad I'm on my own with my girl and my friend's little cob while she's at uni, I wouldn't be able to stop myself upsetting people :o

I just remind myself if they're not on my yard they're not my problem...

Agree though, I don't know why some people bother. Oh sorry, that's right - they don't :-(
 
I haven't been on a DIY yard that didn't have certain characters that made them rather odious places to be.
There always seems to be rather strong characters that like to throw their weight around.

Maybe it should be Some people should just not be allowed on DIY livery..
 
It's not too bad really lol, just sometimes a personality clash you could do without I guess. Tbh I am just tired of it, there's always going to be a bit of friction isn't there. Maybe I just find it harder to deal with cos of my MH :o

The plan of action is to sell our house, and then rent somewhere with a bit of land and some stables.....house going on the market in the spring. We so nearly managed it 18 months ago - right up to the day of exchange ( the perfect restoration property,to buy, with land and a barn to turn into stables, in exchange for ours) till we were gazumped on the day. And you know what, they have not touched that old house, and it's in a worse state than ever. Life can be unfair, can't it all for £1k

Not all DIY yards are bad! I have been on DIY for over 10 years, and I wouldnt do anything different. I basically care for my horse, my way.

I'm a YO doing DIY (only) and yes I've got a contract in place saying firmly that it IS strictly DIY and livery(s) are responsible for doing their own horses themselves and/or appointing someone else to do so if they can't.

Having said that, in an emergency, or like last winter when we had the snow and the owner couldn't get out, I did chuck out some hay to hers - I didn't mind this as she's a fab livery and would have done the same for mine if our situations had been reversed.

I've also done stuff like been there to hold for the farrier/vet etc when she couldn't be there.

But we had an awful livery a few years ago who just chucked her pony in a stable and then went off for the weekend, we didn't know where she'd gone, the pony was going crazy and threatening to climb over the door, and I had to go in there and give it feed, hay, and water, plus muck out. Not funny. She went, by mutual consent; had been on our yard less than a month. She was the only rotten apple we've had in twenty years of doing DIY livery.
 
I agree - I have had numerous DIY's and the majority have become a problem.

The main reason? Not having enough time to do their horses properly with full time jobs and other commitments, with their horses often being difficult due to lack of routine and excercise, especially come the winter.

This wasn't because they weren't caring owners, but just struggled with the commitment of DIY.

My personal view is that anyone who works full time should keep horses on a minimum of part livery - a 10 min rush up to the yard twice a day around other commitments is just not enough to look after a horse properly.

Sorry if I have offended anyone but just speaking from my personal experiences as a YO!!

Not offended! Some of us full timers can manage it!

I work full time, get my arse out of bed at 6am, ride before work and return after work to put her to bed.

Couldn't afford to pay someone part livery and also wouldn't want to- I enjoy doing the dirty jobs :)
 
If you say so sidney. I've met some yard owners who were incompetent & unable to manage, but I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush. Don't judge all us diy ers by someone else's inability to manage.
 
Well I am not tarring you all with the same brush, but as stated before am just saying from my personal experiences.

I won't go too deep into the 'issues' I have had with DIY's, but they include my car being crashed into, my dog being run over, broken glass left in the hay barn, bounced cheques, 'forgotten' appointments for farriers etc when I have been forced to step in....the list could go on! These incidents were all came from clients who worked full time who always appeared disorganised and rushing around the yard.

I still have 2 original DIY's that have been with me for several years - one work's part time and the other is retired, and have never caused me any problems.

Maybe I have just been unlucky with the some of DIY's I have had, but they have left a bad taste in my mouth, and now rent the rest of the stables out instead to one individual, and life is a lot more peaceful.

Indeed, every-one should keep their horses at home. the some liveries might just appreciate the work that goes into maintaining fences/buildings/land etc.
Not having a go at OP, I don't know her from Adam (or Eve).
I hope your move works out soon OP.
 
The best livery we ever had was a pair of in foal mares, who were kept all winter in a straw yard - we chucked hay and water at them, the owner came to see them twice I think......The worse was a pony with sweet itch who wrecked all of our stable doors and gates, and they did not pay - but thought that turning up on Xmas day with champange and chocs was OK!
Personally I could not do it (be a yard owner, and hats off to those that do)
But (and I duck here, as I write this, as I can envisage the boulders coming my way.....) if you are a commercial Yard Owner - surely you must take some responsibility for the horses in your charge - and if an owner does not turn up for a week-end / or it snows and no one can get to the yard - you have to do the mere basics for the animals in your (ultimate) charge - but then gain redress from the owners in terms of added fees etc. To do nothing cannot be an option - or to wait a couple of days to see if they turn up? I would assume that a good livery yard, has someone on site at all times, who is attuned to the normal routines of the DIY folk , and if those animals who are usually (say) visited at certain times of day - and don't turn up - then someone has to do something, for basic horse welfare reasons.......
 
I'm a DIY livery, I've never trashed a car, nor not turned up to do my horses for the hell of it, nor broken anything (but if I did, I'd own up and pay to get it fixed if I couldnt sort it myself), nor run over anyones dog. We aren't all bad, I see my horses twice a day, work full time and am also currently helping with someone else's horse.

Some folk are just morons, please don't tar all us DIY folks with the same brush though, some of us care :(

Same here.

And as for the OP we decided long ago that the only way to survive is to close your eyes to what fellow liveries do and not fret about it. They have to be the responsibility of the owner and the YO, no one else can change things without a row.
