Am worrying a little now.

I plan to full clip tomorrow, including legs.

I have a variety of different weight rugs as he'll still be living out 24/7 for the next month and a bit....

My second clip will be a blanket clip (with legs on).

I've decided to do this because then the legs and blanket bit left on with my second clip will not be so thick and hairy but there will still be some there for warmth and protection.... seriously, his normal winter coat is like almost 2 inches long and seriously THICK!! He also has quite hairy feathers which don't really suit him!

I also thought if i full clip inc legs quite early, it will give a chance for his leg fur to grow a little before winter really sets in?

This is sensible... isn't it?

ETA I have had him full clipped inc legs all Summer too, and he's survived fine ?

Yh, I would go 4 it, though u may wanna leave a bit of feather 4 when it gets muddy, or you'll have 2 spend lots of time cleaning and spraying on stuff 4 mud fever, apparently feathers help gaurd against it.

I think he'll be fine fully clipped out so long as you have nice cosy rugs to put on. I always think it's best to take feathers of unless you intend to show the next summer, in my experinence if they are prone to mud fever they will get it will full feathers but if you clip them off you tend to be able to keep on top of the mud and they only get small patchs. If he's not prone to mud fever then feathers or not he should be fine

Nope not prone to mud fever, and he has feathers off for showing anyway as he's not a traditional cob so they get chopped off!

He will have turnout sock/boot things for when it gets really muddy - these do work as we tried them on another horse last year with good results

I'm planning a similar thing for my loan neddie this year, although will be leaving his legs on, as owner doesn't want his feathers removed. (They're not excessive anyway

If it was my choice, I'd be doing exactly the same as you.

Thats what i did with my heavy coloured girly, she lived out most of the time!
Im full clipping Melly tomorrow, but leaving her legs as Im hoping to show her, and also leaving her head as she isnt keen on the clippers...she's going to look a bit daft but I dont mind!! x
