Our two shetlands are kept in a field down the road from mossburn, quite near a busy main road but not right next to it.
Ok so Wednesday night YO gets woken up by two people banging the door to say they've just narrowly missed a shetland pony on the road.

Cue a mad rush trying to get them off the road which they were tearing up and down on. It was about midnight so luckily not much traffic but still very scary.
It must have been horrible for YO at that time on her own trying to catch them. We rescued Tommy from a shed he'd been locked in for months with hardly any food and water and so he hates being touched and we can only get him to go anywhere by following Breezer. So YO had to catch Breezer then try and get Tommy to follow. She said she was really close to calling the police to help round him up because there were still cars.
Thank god the people who nearly hit Tommy were so nice and came up to get YO!
Now first thought was they'd gotten out through fencing but their gate was wide open!

Then Thursday the person who went to feed them was met by them coming up the lane, the gate open again, and Thursday afternoon, Tommy was out, but the gate was shut

We have no idea why anyone would let them out, we have our suspicions who, but no proof.
For now they've been brought up to Mossburn and are in with the other horses.
We're just glad neither of them got hurt, stupid idiots letting two BLACK shetlnads out on the road in the middle of the night

No, because in all Mossburn's 30+ years we've never had a problem like this and never even thought of padlocking our gates.
It's not like they cause a problem, and most people don't even know they're there, the field is up a track past a few houses.
All i'll say is one of these houses has recently changed residents

the gate is one of them where you pull the metal bar then lift the gate and let the bar go across into a hole in the wooden post.
They're quite happy at the minute and we've decided to let the field have some time for the grass to grow anyway, but when we put them back we'll put a padlock on the gate.
I just don't understand why anyone would want to do that

I wonder if the people who do stupid things like this even stop to think that the ponies are somebodys pets and are loved dearly. They could of killed the animals/caused a bad accident. To them I suppose they are just animals and it is funny/they get a kick out of it. Idiots

If padlock keys are a problem, get a bike chain with a combination lock on it. If you can, put one chain round the hinge side, and one on the opening side.
Keep the evil things contained!

lol! yeah we'll put more locks on it somehow.
they're not evil!

it wasn't their fault lol.

Shetlands are invariably, genetically pre-programmed to be evil. Their very design makes them highly dangerous...small so they can push you off your centre of balance, leg height exactly evolved for kicking homo sapiens mid-shin, small hooves to ensure high psi, lots of forelock to stop you seeing their evil red eyes.
Need I continue?
Don't let your guard down - chain them in!
