So we went, we may not have conquered but we did succeed in our own small way :o.

After all the time off and worry, the fact we even made it to regionals is a great result already for me :). Plus the arena walk was slightly later on the Sunday so didn't quite have to get up in the dark . Arrived and her eyes were on stalks, no idea why, she's been here many a time but this is Topaz :o. Arena walk was going well,

until, the judges got IN their boxes :eek3: the horror!!!!! Honestly Topaz thought they would eat her and not even polos could convince her otherwise... It's a shame as they changed the layout this year, with the judge boxes pretty much flush to the boards (I'm sure last time you could get all the way round the arenas?), and clearly in Topaz's mind way tooooo close :o. Plus side, Topaz was 'ok' about being trade stand side :D.

Worked her for 10 mins as we got really daft just as we left the ring as the judges made noises :eek3:. She came back down to earth, so put her back in the box, plaited, wiped her down and got myself ready (years of showing and changes between classes means I can put an F1 team to shame ;)).

Opted for a short warm-up and to go in before my time as they were running early, the warm-up at Somerford I always find a bit chaotic, I wonder if it is because it is so big, people loose all concept of left to left and giving way, but despite a few abrupt halts :o in we went. Back in the ring for the test and I am so pleased with her, we started off hotter than hot thing (I may not have been able to get near the judge boxes at first :o) but she settled, comeback down to earth and really let me ride her 💕👌🏼. First corner to SI was tricky (read flaily ) but she got braver as we went. Half passes lacked a bit oomph but I forgive her as I could feel her breath some of her tension out. Walk pirouettes did not happen at all really which is a shame, but we didn't jog #silverlinings. Canter work felt really lovely for her, simple changes still not as good as at home but we didn't have any unwarranted flying changes .

Video here, I'm still pleased with her as it's all still so far out of her comfort zone and she tries so hard :), managed 61% overall and wasn't last .

Clever fatty hippo, even got to play in the water and pretend to be eventers again ;).

Thanks for reading :).

Brilliant, well done :D Vid looks good even with the wobbles, as you say it's a big ask of a test for a horse that hasn't been back in work for long so jolly good effort, I'd say. Love the photo in the water :D

Looks like lots of fun. Shame about moving the judges boxes-seems like it should have been a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it? Lovely test and loving the grey jacket. xx

Thank you, she's come back into work well just the pregnant look we need to get rid of! I was pleased with her effort, now to start advanced medium for real :eek3:!

:) Yeah I've no idea why they've moved the arenas as it meant you couldn't get all the way round, but never mind a new experience for her :). Grey jacket is the Fairplay Bea jacket and I love it!

I know! I've been tempted by the navy one for a while. Please let me remain unconvinced to buy it since I won't actually be out competing properly till next year...

Weeeeee well done Topaz! That's friggin' fantastic! I love the 'yeehaw!' big canter down the long side! She's super, well done the pair of you :) so she went a bit green in the arena walk, who cares, she performed so well in the test! What a good girlie :)

Also love the photos in the water, please tell me you popped down the steps! :D

Well done, she's really rather unique isn't she? Loved the video, you wouldn't be able to get my mare within 3 miles of that judges box :D

Ah thank you, I thought she did well too :), be nice if she would relax a touch more but mustn't be greedy ;).

Good god no, she would have def dumped me and my lovely white breeches in the water !!!! Though now both carriage horses are sound again a trip to investigate the schooling field is being hatched ;).

Ah unique, I like that :D, she's never bothered about the judge boxes before but as with anything there is always a first!

Well done!!! She doesn't look like an easy ride, well done for keeping her calm. It's great watching your and MP's videos...with a bit of luck and hard work Pocholo and I will hopefully get to Medium next year!

lovely video - thankyou for posting it.

I have a big Friesian chap and am only just starting to force myself to attempt sitting trot and am in awe at how beautifully quiet you manage to sit to your girls trot... its fabulous!

I always maintain if me and Topaz can do it, anyone can :) go for it! She is anything but easy sometimes, but we still love her little daft face :D.

Wow that is such a complement, I still feel awful, bouncy and messy :o, sitting trot is our nemesis and I want to give AM a go and I have to sit for ALL of it :eek3:! Glad it seems to look better than it feels, though the softer she is over her back the easier it is.

Well done, you both look very smart and happy. Good uphill canter down the long side. I have just started competing at this level this season and find it quite a step up from Elementary. Unfortunately in NZ we have to sit to ALL the trot work even the extensions, not easy when you are the wrong side of 55! but I am working hard on it.

What's next on the agenda for you both?

What a super clever hippo indeed! Must have been a big atmosphere there and lots of scary things about to eat her. I think she was very brave 😀 Great outing, well done. Do you miss the eventing?

Thank you, I found it a big step too but it's really starting to feel comfortable now, well when we get it together it does . Don't envy you there, medium over here has allowed me to ease in gradually, but getting them super soft over the back and not holding yourself too still seems to help a lot we've just not cracked the extensions yet...

She's off to do another Advance Medium next weekend to see if we can nap our next AF sheet, big ask though as it's AM98! Otherwise we've got the Midway Champs in Aug to look forward to :).

She is isn't she , she was only concerned about the judges, (maybe she is a proper dressage horse ), which is great improvement! Anyone with a spooky horse, if you keep going and expanding those comfort zones you can get there eventually!

Yeah but then I make sure she gets to jump a bit too as she loves it, think we'll be making a trip back to Somerford soon! I think it suits Topaz to do it this way where there is no pressure, 3 things in a day did use to blow her mind a little :o...

Wow, super super well done, you'd never guess she'd not had the ideal run up to a big comp.
I love watching her lateral work, it looks like she is desperate to just throw those legs all over the place, and is having to put all her mental effort in keeping them in the right place - a proper triumph of training over type, she's fab.

Ah you're making me blush :o, though you should see baby Skylla doing lateral work if you want to see legs akimbo ! Topaz is definitely a trier despite being a bit too hot and reactive about life, I always think she makes me look better than I am, rather than it actually being my influence ;).
