I'd let people make their own choices, make their own money, keep and look after their own families and undertake their own risks in life....if they die, then so beit, if they survive then surely by your reckoning it truly will be survival of the fittest.

Oh this is getting heavy!

You cannot pick and choose who you look after under the NHS, whether it be the hatless horse rider, the obese junk foot addict or the smoker with lung troubles.

The reality is a hat only limits the damage, but in the same way as a seat belt. I find it quite scary that a lorry doesn't have seat belts (with all that glass) and I don't normally ride without a hat.

However the thing that landed me in hospital last time was the fungi from the hay...... didn't see that one coming!

We should ban cars, stairs, and all fast activities...... wouldn't life be boring though?

I've only ever once ridden without a hat. That was about a fortnight ago, and I fell off. The first time I've fallen off in years.

I think, with all the differnt styles of hats, the breatheable ones, even the Troxel endurance hats, no-one has any credible excuse for saying they feel more comfy without a hat.


And for the eejit who proudly boasted the NHS wouldnt be picking up the tab for her accident as she has private medical cover, blimey, I've yet to see a BUPA ambulance. Are they soooo fashionable they're invisible?

And those who snigger and say "i only go hatless in the menage"... tell you what, I'll come and whack you round the scull with a fencing post, then we'll take piccies and see what the damage is shall we? I could post the photos on here and we could have a debate about wether that fact your scull resembles a crushed melon means you're a cr*p rider or not.... then we could add up the costs to the NHS for your ambulance and have little posts from your family saying what they think of you.
 
I used to forget to put one on all the time.
Yard I had first lessons at was very carefree and diddnt mind what you wore as long as the horse was fine.

Then went to work at a bigish yard with a YO who was obcessed with safty adn the BHS way(although was often seen without a hat herself

) and it became drilled into me to pop your hat on for riding and BP for jumping.

Still forget to do up chinstrap at times

Actually on a serious note here Cotswold - what freaked me out the most in my life, was when my little daughter broke her arm (and they made her move to the city hospital because our little town hospital had closed down for the night) in an ambulance rather than me driving her.....the ambulance DID NOT have any seatbelts! I was so shocked I almost said no, and that I'd rather take her in my vehicle in her car seat.

Is this still the same? Or have they put seatbelts in ambulances now?

. It's like a nice hotel and you choose your room service....and the food it absolutely fabulous, and so are the facilities. Even the nurses are very intelligent there and you can have great discussions with them.

Ha I did the no reins/stirrups thing WITHOUT the lunge rein, and in gallop

Had my hat on though so I could be as injured as I liked and not get into trouble

It's 'Shilasdair', if you don't mind....I know...it does have a few syllables....but you'll cope. I've been in private and NHS and the food was equally unhealthy looking in both...and weird combinations (can't tell you if/how it tasted for reasons of self preservation).

I actually work in the operating theatre trying to put people back together. Yes it's a job which we are paid to do but there are better ways in which time and resources could be spent.(eg people with cancer)
If we asked any of those patients who had had a serious head injury whether it was from not wearing a hat or drink driving etc, they regret it and wish they could turn back the clock.
Tell me is it just vanity that stops you wearing hats?

Erm that would be me. Don't worry have paid pleny of taxes & NI as fulltime employed since 18 and never claimed a penny in benefits etc... so put more than enough in the kitty for a ride (but sure NHS could claim back costs from insurance company).

Menage doesn't have a fence round it. So no danger of hitting my SKULL on fence. Did you bang you SCULL when you fell off hatless???
