Had lesson on Fly on sunday and he was just not right. He jumped like he had never jumped before and was generally 'vacant'. Booked back lady to see him tonight. I hacked him out yesterday and then left him on yard for an hour and a half. When I went back to do evening stables he was standing with his head down. I offered him a carrot and mint and he was not interested. Now that is seriously out of character. I called the vet as was worried about the start of colic and whilst I was waiting for her I led him round for 20 minutes. This seemed to make him feel better. After all the usual tests (temp, rectal exam etc) she could find nothing specific, (made me look a right plonker!). Checked him every hour and he seemed fine although he didn't pass any droppings till 4 hours later. What a worry. Will watch him carefully over next few days and if I am still worried will get bloods checked. Wish he could tell me whats wrong.

I know a few horses that had a virus, they were lacking in energy and just "not right". The only way to find out if it is a virus is to have blood tests done and see if they have an elevated white blood cell count. Once the vet found the virus all they could do was put the horse off work for 4-6 weeks. If you do have the blood tests done and nothing is wrong, at least you can rule it out!

My horse had something similar a while ago but he had so little energy he couldnt get up from lying down on the floor. In the end the vet came and gave him some drugs which gave him a fit and he has been fine ever since. Thy didnt have any explanation of what it was though.

One of my old ponies went like this last week. She went really quiet, away from the other horses in the field, off her food and kept lying down. Vet came expecting colic or laminitis (as she has a history) but said it wasn't these, it was probably a virus and gave bute for comfort and antibiotics to help immune system. Bloods confirmed a virus next day and now she's fine.

Why do vets insist on giving AB's for a virus? They are ONLY effective againt bacterial infections and the vets tend to give them out so the owners feel they are doing something.

AB were to prevent her picking up anything else whilst immune system would be week from the virus. It has nothing to do with 'making people think they are doing something'.
