Sometimes I despair

Poor, poor woman. It’s one of my fears, possible with Bear, impossible with Mr Don’t Touch me Zak. I’ve heard of it happening or almost, a few times near here, people just grabbing the dog and shoving a lead on, running off with it.

Blimey, that's awful. I once had a white van with 3 young men pull up at the side of the road and ask me if the dog I was walking was for sale. When I said no and continued walking they followed me slowly asking me if I was sure. I opened the garden gate to a nearby house and they drove off. Frightened the living day lights out of me.

My girlfriend and I have lurchers and terriers, highly nickable to the wrong sort.
I have warned her if anyone stops here round the lanes and tries to take hers to let him off, he stands a better chance loose,
he's a very powerful and large bull lurcher, they wouldnt catch him but he's highly protective of her so if they tried anything I really do pity them, he'd rip their faces off.
Personally I would have killed that scumbag and worried about the consequences afterwards, no one touches my dogs.

The trouble is that some people freeze in such situations and it sounds as if that's what happened here.

Having owned lurchers I agree with your concerns. My MIL owned several and was followed whilst walking them, she did a long detour via footpaths to lose them.

I wouldn't have had to worry about killing the scumbag doglet would have done it for me. It is not a case that no one touches my dog his view is that no one touches me. Perhaps this cowardly thief would like to try it with him.

This lady was interviewed on our regional news last night. She was just very ordinary, not the sort to lash out, completely bewildered and in total shock. I don't know what the chances are of finding the dog.

Yes they do and have been in a few sticky situations myself, now I hit first and ask questions later, it's the only way to survive out there these days

It's the only way for you but some people instinctively freeze, especially women because it is actually safer for them. It isn't a decision they consciously make, it just happens.

As I saw the report on the TV this morning, I was thinking about our 2 Lab pups and the Rottweiler who would eat any-one who tried to remove one of them.

Oh how awful, that poor, poor woman.

Sadly, it’s not just fight or flight - it’s also Freeze, which is a legitimate, understandable action that many people take in order to keep themselves safe; particularly women.

If I‘m completely honest, I’m not sure that my reaction would be to fight someone who was threatening me with a weapon. Thankfully my lovely, friendly boy is a unique but undesirable crossbreed. I hope for everyone’s sake this person is found, and the dog returned home safely.

Luna would hide behind me, bo would warn off people and threaten to kill them. I’d like to think I could fight to the death for both of them, and definitely would want to, but reality is very different when in that situation.
As I just posted on the new thread, should our house ever get broken into, take what you want, but please leave the dogs alone.

Never forget your voice. Scream. Cause a scene. Run.

I appreciate the comments PAS made in her last post but I think, as the world is changing for a far worse and more aggressive place, that women have to change with it. To my mind that means planning. No one wants to have a go at a knife man but in this case I imagine he was a total coward and didn't expect any response whatsoever from his victim. From watching many women (and men) but especially women as they are walking along they are in their own little world or the world of their headphones. Many are totally unaware of people around them. There are so many where it would be very easy to walk up behind and attack them. On my average off road cycle ride I could easily pick up at least 20 small dogs and ride off with them and sometimes their owners wouldn't even notice. :D

I think we have to be much more on the lookout as to what is going on around us, be very aware if someone gets too close and take evasive action, have a glance around for a weapon or be ready to lash out, scream and have the mentality to cause a scene. It won't always work of course and sometimes we may have to hand the dog over but it may just help.

Of course. I am always on high alert whilst walking - with or without dogs. Isn’t that sad.
