Have always had a problem with fleas as she is long haired and low to the ground, she is treated regularly and flea bathed. The fleas have now vanished but she became very itchy.

Then what looked like big teenage yellow heads popped all over her tummy over night. The vet gave her steroids which she has almost finished, spots went in a couple of days and no more itching....

Except for a patch on her muzzle which started as a little hair loss and has no progressed to a hailess patch about 10p sized and looks like eczema.

The vet advised if any more irritation occurs we may have to investigate into allergies...tests....special food, money and more money.

I don't really want to rush into this as it is localised at the minute so any ideas what it may be or what I could put on it to soothe the muzzle area?

Sorry about the waffle!

Could it be a food or contact allergy, discount everything, grass, flowers, a household product (particularly anything with pine in it).

It can also depend on whether it is a wet or dry patch. I have had success with aloe vera gel for dry patches and Sudocrem for wet.

The steroids will suppress the itchyness and patches but it can then manifest itself in other ways.

My dog is also on Piriton which seems to keep the worst of his allergies at bay.

I wouldn't know where to start the patch has been there for some time but much smaller and no redness. She always has her nose to the ground so could be many things outside.

Food wise she has her normal food and treats but they don't vary always had the same.

Just seems like a minefield!

What is the brand? Allergies/intolerances can take time to build up, even if you have been feeding the same food for a while. Wheat and corn can usually trigger intolerances, they're not really a natural part of a dog's diet but it they are used as fillers in a lot of dry food.

Please don't shoot me down but....

She is fed butchers wet food and has bakers left down which she grazes on maybe twice a day...

If I can find somewhere that stocked better dry food I will buy it no problem but wet food I have no idea what's good/bad.

I have grown up with dogs and just carried on feeding what my mum fed:confused:

Take her off the Bakers, I bet that will help! It's full of additives, colours and even carcinogens.
Skinners is a good dry food, if you contact them via email they can recommend a local stockist, I don't feed wet food, Nature Diet is meant to be good, Applaws isn't bad, you could also look into Prize Choice frozen raw food (you can cook it if you want, I just defrost and feed it raw) you can buy it out of the freezer at Pets@Home and they deliver too, they do rabbit, beef, tripe, lots of different things.

Would u advise not to feed wet food?
If not do u put down portions of dry as meals?

Not to sound precious but do dogs adjust well if swapped from wet to only dry?

I'm not going to advise, just throwing out ideas :) I just personally never have, most tinned wet foods are mostly water in their makeup!

I feed one of my dogs on dry food, he gets two scoops, twice a day, the other is on raw. If raw is something you are interested in, even if just for one day a week, there is a sticky at the top of the lounge.

TBH I think it is the Bakers rather than the wet food that will be the issue.

Pet food companies like to tell us that dogs need balance, they need wet food and dry food and a mixer and if we feed their extra special dental treats their teeth will never fall out - when in fact it can be simpler and better for them to keep things as close to nature as possible :)

Great advise as always I will lob out the bakers and try skinners and see if there is a difference.
might see if she likes any of the pets@home freezer ones at a later date.

Anyhow a new bag of feed will be a damn bit cheaper than allergy testing from the vets.

Thank you for your help!

No worries, I never got the full allergy work-up on my dog, it is expensive, he is not insured and between the vet and I we worked it out via a process of elimination (my vet rocks, I changed practise because the last lot were no help at all) and his condition is now manageable.

My lab had a bald patch on her nose 2 yrs ago.
Started as slight hairloss, and expanded to the size of a 50pence piece.
She was scraped for Demodectic Mange, and sure enough she had mites in her skin scrape.
Because it was one patch, she was treated with a wash of Aludex to the area of her face - thank god as it's horrible stuff (some have to wash the whole dog).
Anyhow patch cleared after a few weeks and has never returned.
Regards wet food, apparently Chappie Original is pretty simple in it's composition. Definitely get off the Bakers as it's full of crap
