Hi

Just discovered that my horsey has a really deep sore on the inside of his mouth. It must have been where the bit has been rubbing him. Its really on the inside of his mouth and quite high up hence why I have never noticed it before

Feel really bad as I have been riding him like this and he must have been in pain but didn't really do anything naughty- he is so honest! The only thing I have noticed is that he ahs been really reluctant to bend to the right recently but as he is generally not the best schooled cob i just thought it was due to not going in the school as much recently as hacking and x country is more fun!

Anyway my question is I have him in a metal snaffle at the moment but have also been using a happy mouth pelham before. I think the snaffle might have made it worse but I am wondering if anyone could recommend a good bit to use on him. He is strong somethimes but also lazy when he doesn't think its exciting.

I am going to give him 2 weeks off and just lunge him with a dualy (spelling) or loose school. (both of which I am crap at!) Will see if it clears up but worried about it being a recurring problem!

Any tips for exercising without a bit in?

Sorry its a bit long!

Sounds more likely that he has a sharp edge on one of his teeth. When is he due the dentist? Think I would be getting his teeth checked before blaming the bit.

He was only done about a month! Thats why I was thinking this change in bit was doing it as surely dentist would have noticed it if it was there then. It's exactly where the bit sits in the corner of his moutn but slighlty to the inside.

whoever you used should have noticed that and then asked about his bitting and advised further from there. Did the EDT let you feel before and after his work so you are assured nothing was left sharp?

I was at work at the time so wasn't there. He is on full livery during the week. That's really helped though as I am now going to ask yard owners if dentist said anything. Might get the vet out to take a look as they can rasp a tooth if it needs it. I would try and get the dentist out again but they are really busy in this area and you have to book in advance!

Anyone recommend a good EDT in Cheshire who would come out at short notice?

Thanks for all your replies

The only thing that makes me think it is the bit is the fact that it looks like it has rubbed over time (had him 6 years) as it is like a half centremetre indent where the bit sits which looks like it is worn down and the most worn down bit is reddish. Kind of like a blister we get from the reins or something. Hope that makes sense! I might take a picture tomorrow and post it tomorrow although taking a picture whilst opening his mouth is easier said than done!!

good idea take a photo

Diane Holliday is from Bolton and works in a 20-30 miles radius.
Do NOT use a male dentist with the initials M.E
Ivan Stockdale is also v v v good and out of Cheshire

Just a thought, but I did read on here once that a Happy Mouth had made someone's horses mouth sore.

yes they do, terrible bits and should be banned!!!
not happy at all!
all it takes is for the horse to chew the bit once and create a jaged mouthpiece that is very uncomfortable for the horse to tolerate after.
