Sore Roxie Dog

I really hope the mri reveals something treatable. I’m sending vibes and thinking the healed best outcome for you both.
You’re doing so well sleep deprived dealing with this then taking on a dentist appointment. Try to rest when you can and care for yourself too. Roxie’s in good hands and answers will come. Everything crossed for you and Roxie 🫂

yes fingers crossed to no surgery!

I’ll know more tomorrow when they call about what the plan is, but I’m hoping it’s just continue on the new medication and crate rest.
I presume it’s a slipped disc type thing? Did she have an MRI?
Is it common that they can heal without surgical intervention? I don’t know much about long backed breed troubles.

Yes it’s a slipped disc. She didn’t have the MRI as they generally only do them if they are going to do the surgery so they know what they’re going to find.

With dogs who are still walking with IVDD they apparently have a good chance of healing with strict crate rest as the body can clear away the disc debris, but it takes time.

As she’s comfortable now they’re not keen to do surgery as messing around near the spinal cord can make her worse. Obviously the risk/benefit is different for dogs who aren’t able to walk.

Now she’s settled on the new painkillers I’m happier about resting her. I was struggling with seeing her in so much pain.

They will have taken her off the IV pain medication overnight so they’ll confirm she’s still happy on oral meds before can can go and collect her.

Thank you. Very best of luck.

That’s great news the other painkillers are working better and she’s more comfortable now. She must be happy to be home, and you get to relax more now and allow time to do the healing. Bless her 😍

I know that you haven’t had an mri but are they able to indicate which disc is implicated?

I have a dog that had an injury that resulted in the contents of l7/s1 rupturing and the ‘debris‘ collecting around the foramen from where the sciatic nerve emanates.

He is 9 years old and is free of pain meds; we are now 3.5 years post injury. He goes rough shooting still and is a happy chappy who would jump anything if allowed. However, I manage him to within an inch of his life as to what he is allowed and not allowed to do. He is not a ‘long backed breed’ but I hope it gives you some hope and positivity for the future. For us it was short term pain for long term gain. Fingers crossed for you and the flying demon! 🙂

I appreciate that this was not classic IVDD but hopefully close enough to be pertinent.

Thanks for your reply. Did he have surgery or did he heal with rest and medication?

They didn’t specify a disc but they said the injury is in the thoracolumbar junction which according to Google is T11-L3.

I’m so worried she’s not going to get her quality of life back. She loves leaping around on walks and our downstairs is open plan so it’s difficult to stop her jumping on and off the sofas unless we crate her which I don’t really want to do when she’s recovered. With 2 kids I can’t watch her 100% of the time.

can you get ramps? daxie friends have a lot of ramps!
I have been considering ramps but I’m not sure how they could work with the floor space we have (our house is not big!) but if it’s what she needs then we’ll work it out!

Strict rest and meds only.

Crates, then play pens then a long line so that he was tied to my waist so that I knew where he was and what he was up to.

No stairs or jumping or rough housing with other dogs.

It was a long six months but worth it.
Fingers crossed for you both.

That’s great news she wagged her tail. All the little wins are good signs of right direction of healing, and a reminder to the HHO crew to send even more healing vibes!
She’s such an adorable little dog, and I’ve always been melted by every post you make with her. Especially love her mornings tucked in bed not wanting to get up, and of course her ionic flying high through the fields posts!

I can’t wait to be able to have her snuggle in bed again and to see her flying around.

I feel a little more hopeful today than I have in the last month.

I’m very glad to have some vibes for her!

Vibes from here too 🤞🍀

What’s the general recommended practice for spinal inflammation? Is absolute rest best to allow healing, or is some small measured movement good for helping potential fluid to drain and prevent stiffness? I can imagine it’s a difficult balance to strike.

As far as I’ve understood, she needs as much stillness and rest as possible. She’s just going into the garden on a lead for toilet breaks.

A call back to them to update them and get guidance on progress is a good idea.
It’s useful to write brief daily notes of changes, symptoms, appetite, drinking level, toileting, like a diary, as it’s easy to lose track as the days roll by. Useful to then give vets as an accurate record.

She asked for a tummy rub today! I was so excited.

However after I took her out for a wee she was shaking and whining again. She’s also plaiting behind when she walks.

I think I’ll call back on Monday and maybe book the surgery.
Are you taking her out in a crate and not picking her up? I really think that helped my dog, so his back wasn’t bent. He slept upstairs and also carried him up and down in a crate. Remember when they toilet this can cause pain as they hunch their back. I used to cringe and get really anxious watching him go. He was on painkillers and only out to wee and poo, and on gabapentin, about 6 weeks I think. He didn’t have any X-rays. Monitored by my vet, I also sent videos to her regularly as he hates going to the vets. My OH made a ramp for when he was a bit better, after about a month I think. The ramp helped him get over the patio door threshold into garden. Ramp made of wood and he glued carpet on top so it had good grip. There is hope, hang on in there. My dog made a great recovery. Not helped that on his first proper short walk, got back to the house and a neighbour’s had escaped and ran up and bit him. I kicked it, bit him again, I kicked it harder, the dog flew about 2 feet away and landed on it’s back, it then ran off. I was so upset & he laid on his bed shaking. The vet was thrilled with his recovery. This was a few years ago now. He’s 13 and still doing well for his age. Thinking of you and your beautiful dog.
