Sore Roxie Dog

Are you taking her out in a crate and not picking her up? I really think that helped my dog, so his back wasn’t bent. He slept upstairs and also carried him up and down in a crate. Remember when they toilet this can cause pain as they hunch their back. I used to cringe and get really anxious watching him go. He was on painkillers and only out to wee and poo, and on gabapentin, about 6 weeks I think. He didn’t have any X-rays. Monitored by my vet, I also sent videos to her regularly as he hates going to the vets. My OH made a ramp for when he was a bit better, after about a month I think. The ramp helped him get over the patio door threshold into garden. Ramp made of wood and he glued carpet on top so it had good grip. There is hope, hang on in there. My dog made a great recovery. Not helped that on his first proper short walk, got back to the house and a neighbour’s had escaped and ran up and bit him. I kicked it, bit him again, I kicked it harder, the dog flew about 2 feet away and landed on it’s back, it then ran off. I was so upset & he laid on his bed shaking. The vet was thrilled with his recovery. This was a few years ago now. He’s 13 and still doing well for his age. Thinking of you and your beautiful dog.
The crate is too big to pick up so she’s been stepping out of her crate and I lift her with my hands ynder her armpits and in front of her hind legs to keep her back as straight as possible.

I’m so pleased your dog has made a full recovery. The experience after the first walk must have been terrifying!

I realised that the crate I used is a fabric and mesh crate I use in the car. It has an edge at the bottom of only about 1 inch so he didn’t have to step very high. He was awful to pick up. He’s never liked being picked up and trying to also pick him up when he was in pain was so stressful for both of us. Keeping everything crossed for your gorgeous dog and your family. The situation was so stressful and upsetting x

She’s having the MRI and surgery either tonight or tomorrow depending on when they can slot her in.

I had a bit of a cry leaving her there but it’s the right thing.

I’ve said all the way through that I have a bad gut feeling about the whole thing but I’ve got to at least try.

I think tiredness, baby hormones and having a horrid cold aren’t helping.

Lots of vibes needed please.

I’m sorry to hear that. As amymay says that explains the rest recovery not having a significant effect. A quick google suggests for high % compression, surgery is the only option and is a good % successful with a careful recovery period required. It’s good the resting stage was truly resting so as not to make it worse, your diligence to keep her resting will have hopefully paid off for a good surgery outcome.
Thinking of you all 🫂

I’m so upset and full of what if’s, but I’ve done everything the vets have recommended when they’ve suggested it.

I feel I should have pushed for the imaging last week though. .
You've followed your vets recommendations and advice to the letter, but 'what if's' are natural. You mustn't beat yourself up over them.

They likely see many dogs that painkillers and rest help significantly, so I can understand them suggesting that first before draining your funds on imaging and surgery. Especially if you mentioned she had a tumble at dog daycare..?
It’s so hard to know the absolute best thing to do at any stage, yet you’ve taken it as seriously as warranted and she’s kept very still while seeing if rest and meds help.
They are the experts that can do the surgery necessary and trusting their skills gives Roxie the best chance.
It’s understandable to feel everything you do..big hug xx

Surgery all done! It was tricky and took a while but she’s awake. They expect her to be worse tomorrow from all the messing around but they are expecting good results in time 🤞🤞

The surgeon explained about the disc material - apparently when it first bursts out it’s like cottage cheese 🤢 and then it hardens over time. As hers had been out for a few weeks it was quite stuck to her spinal cord so it took a while to get it all off carefully.

I’m intrigued to see her MRI!

oh that is good news! I’ve been checking in hoping for an update.
Well done to your vets getting her through. Did they say how long they’re keeping her in for?
